COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland goes on the road in Big Ten play as they face Illinois. This is the second consecutive season with a conference series, with both teams meeting last season in College Park.

The Terrapins are coming off a 5-2 loss at home to UMBC on Tuesday. After falling behind 1-0 early, Elijah Lambros hit a two-run home run to left field to put the Terps ahead 2-1. UMBC would tie the game in the top of the six on a two out, RBI single. The Retrievers would go out in front in the eighth, after a line drive went off the left field foul pole for a two run homer. UMBC would add another run in the top ninth, and would close out the game in the bottom half for the win.
Year Two For Calarco
- Alex Calarco is having a career year in year two in College Park. Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco ranks among some of the top hitters in multiple categories as the team reaches the midpoint of the season.
- Calarco's 13 home runs this season are the fifth-most in the nation and are tied for the most in the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally, while his 47 RBI are also tied for the fifth-most in the country.
- On Thursday, Calarco was named as one of 45 players to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country. Calarco is the first Maryland player to feature on the midseason watch list since Matt Shaw in 2023.
Alex Calarco continues to lead the Terrapins' offense in multiple categories and be one of the best hitters in the country. Calarco ranks in the top five in both home runs and RBI this season, while hitting for a .327 batting average.
McCoy's Brilliance On The Mound
- Redshirt sophomore Kyle McCoy has been one of the best pitchers in the conference this season after returning from an injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season. Through six starts, McCoy has a 3-1 record with a 2.79 ERA and 39 strikeouts.
- McCoy tied his longest outing of his career against USF, going eight innings. The start for McCoy was his third consecutive with seven or more strikeouts. McCoy only allowed one earned run in the outing, with four outings this season where the lefty has allowed zero or one earned run.
- McCoy has been very effective in his first season back from injury. McCoy has had four consecutive starts with six or more strikeouts in an outing, holding a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.3:1. McCoy's three wins are tied for the seventh-most in the conference, while throwing the third-most innings and sixth-fewest walks in the Big Ten.

Ain't It Grand
- The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
- By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
- Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.
Chris Hacopian hit his second grand slam of the year on Feb. 23 against Western Carolina. The grand slam was the sixth of the season for the Terps in their first six games.
Scouting The Fighting Illini
- Illinois picked up a 8-2 win over Illinois State on Tuesday at home. Cameron Choi-Alloy had a 2-2 game with a double and a pair of RBI, while Collin Jennings launched a two-run home run. Illinois kept the opposing offense in check, with Illinois State only scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning.Seven of the eight pitchers that took the mound for the Fighting Illini a scoreless inning of work.
- Jack Zebig leads the team with 36 hits and 33 RBI, hitting for a .353 average and adding six home runs. Nick Groves leads the team in batting average, coming into the weekend with a .357 average. Groves leads the team in stolen bases with 12, which is the third-most in the Big Ten. Kyle Schupmann leads the team in home runs, coming into play with seven on the season.
- Four players hold the team lead with two wins so far this season. Zach Bates leads the staff out of the bullpen, The sophomore lefty has made ten appearances this season, pitching to a 2.61 ERA with a 1-0 record while holding opposing hitters to a .162 average. Redshirt junior righty Ben Plumley leads the team in strikeouts, with 30 over 33.2 innings on the mound. The Fighting Illini staff has allowed the second-fewest walks this season, with just 106 free passes this season.
Stanley Bobb Baseball Player Development Center
- On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Maryland unveiled the new Stanley Bobb Baseball Performance Center. This will serve as the new indoor training facility for the Maryland Baseball program.
- This new state-of-the-art facility will allow baseball student-athletes the opportunity to train year round in a controlled environment, allowing them to continue to hone their skills regardless of the conditions.
- The 8,500 square foot facility will have defined spaces for both pitchers and hitters in a climate controlled environment. The facility features state-of-the-art technology.
- This project is one of the many as part of Maryland's Building Champions initiative, a campaign that enables investment in facility renovation and enhancement.
- The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
