CARSON, CA – No. 7 Maryland women's lacrosse went 2-0 on its West Coast swing after dominating No. 18 USC, 16-8, at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday. The Terps are now 9-3 and 4-1 in Big Ten play. Their other win on their road trip was against Arizona State on April 3. This was Maryland's third win over a ranked team this season.
USC (8-5, 1-4 Big Ten) got off to an early 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the opening 1:46. However, Maryland scored 11 of the following 12 goals, including a 10-goal unanswered run to lead 11-3 at halftime. The scoring run later ballooned to 12-0. Maryland remained in control for the rest of the game and cruised to victory. The Terps dominated defensively, holding the Trojans scoreless for 33:12 through the first and third quarters.
Thomas tied her career-high for points (seven). She matched her seven points on May 4, 2023, against Rutgers. Lipkin also matched her career-best for points scored (five). She's scored five points multiple times in her career.
Goalie JJ Suriano made seven saves at goalie. She was helped by an elite defensive performance that limited USC to just 14 shots on goal. Neve O'Ferrall (three) and Maddy Sterling caused turnovers.
Outside of Maryland's dominant offensive and defensive performance, it was success on draw controls that contributed largely to the victory. Freshman Kayla Gilmore posted a career-high nine wins in the circle. Fellow freshman Reileigh McEnroe won five draws after entering the game with just one win all season. Overall, the Terps won 18-of-27 draw controls.
Devin Livingston (2 goals), Emma Abbazia (2 goals), Gilmore (1 goal & 2 assists) and Kori Edmondson (1 goal & 1 assist) were other offensive standouts.
