No. 6 Terps Fall To No. 12 Penn In NCAA Second Round In Double OT, 11-10

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 6-seeded and ranked Maryland women's lacrosse was defeated by No. 12-ranked Penn in the NCAA Tournament Second Round in double overtime, 11-10, in the second round at Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Friday. Catherine Berkery scored the game-winner for Penn (12-6) off an assist by Erika Chung. Maryland finished its season 15-6 overall. 

Maryland scored three straight goals to begin the second quarter to break a 2-2 tie and lead 5-2. The Terps remained in control from there until Penn tied the game at 10-10 with a goal off a Maryland turnover with two seconds left in regulation. The score came after JJ Suriano made six saves in the third, shutting out the Quakers in the period, and Penn brought the game within one goal four times in the fourth. 

The Terps' first six goals were all scored by different players. Their scorers included Lauren LaPointe (3 goals & 1 assist), Kori Edmondson (2 goals & 1 assist), Jordyn Lipkin (2 goals), Chrissy Thomas, Lexi Dupcak and Devin Livingston

LaPointe has seven hat tricks on the season and eight in her career overall. Emma Abbazia recorded her first career multi-assist game, finishing with a career-high three assists.  
  

Suriano made 15 saves on 26 shots on goal between the pipes while picking up a career-high six ground balls. It was her eighth game this season with double-digit saves. Sophie Halus (two), Neve O'Ferrall, Shelby Sullivan and Annabella Schafer each caused a turnover. 
 
Kayla Gimore led the Terps with nine wins from the draw circle. Sullivan followed with four. As a team, Maryland won 17-of-26 draws.   
Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland and Penn were tied at 2-2 entering the second frame. Penn's two goals were sandwiched between back-to-back scores by Jordyn Lipkin and Chrissy Thomas
  • The Terps scored three consecutive goals to begin the second quarter from Lexi Dupcak, Kori Edmondson and Devin Livingston. They held a three-goal advantage before Penn scored three of four goals in the final four minutes. Lauren LaPointe scored Maryland's final tally, and the Terps led 6-5 at the break. A different player scored each of Maryland's goals. JJ Suriano had seven saves. 
  • Maryland led 7-5 entering the final frame. Lipkin scored the lone goal in the quarter, giving her two in the contest. Suriano reached double-digit saves, making six in the quarter.  
  • The Quakers brought the game within one goal four times in the fourth. However, the latter time they tied the game and sent it to overtime, tied 10-10. Penn tied it with a goal off a Maryland turnover with two seconds left in regulation.  
  • The game went to double overtime after neither team was able to net the game-winning goal. Both sides made clutch defensive plays to stay alive.  
  • Catherine Berkery scored the game-winner for Penn off an assist by Erika Chung.

  • Lauren LaPointe (3 goals & 1 assists) notched the 11th multi-point game of her career. It was her 10th career game with multiple goals.
  • Kori Edmondson (2 goals & 1 assist) recorded multiple points for the 44th time in her career. She has scored multiple goals 42 times. 
  • Jordyn Lipkin (2 goals) recorded the 27th multi-point game of her career. It was her 24th with multiple goals. 
  • Emma Abbazia (3 assists) recorded her seventh career multi-point game. It was her first career multi-assist game.
