COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior long snapper
Ethan Gough has been named an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee, the American Football Coaches Association announced today.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football athletes for their unwavering commitment to community service and their "good works" off the field. This year there are a record-breaking 197 nominees championing causes including youth mentorship, mental wellness, homelessness, health care access, and many more.
In addition to being actively involved with a charitable organization or service group, each player must also maintain strong academic standing to be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
"When nearly 200 young athletes choose to serve, it creates a ripple effect far beyond the game," said
Danny Wuerffel, former NFL quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer for whom the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is named. "Their leadership in the community is just as worthy of recognition as their performance on the field."
Gough is heavily involved in the community, working on the Gossett Fellows community service project where he served as the point person for a group of student-athletes that was able to raise $1,200 to provide hygiene kits for fifth grade children at an under resourced local elementary school. Gough has also volunteered his time at the Children's National Hospital and played a big role in the SAAC canned food drive in November 2024.
This summer, Gough and teammate
Daniel Owens partnered with Uplifting Athletes for Maryland's Life For Life event to raise money for rare disease research. Both players volunteered to shave their heads if the team raised $10,000 and because of Gough's leadership, the team raised double their goal.
Gough, who attended DeMatha Catholic prior to arriving in College Park, has been Maryland's primary long snapper for each of the last three seasons. The senior helped punter
Bryce McFerson finish second in the Big Ten in punting average (45.1 yards) last year.
Academically, Gough has graduated with a 3.804 GPA in Criminal Justice. He has been named to the CSC Academic All-District Team and has been an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
The final roster of the 23 Allstate AFCA Good Works award recipients will be announced later in September. A voting panel of former Good Works Team members, head coaches and journalists select the team roster based on outstanding leadership on and off the field.
