Offensive Onslaught Leads Maryland to 5-0 Victory Amidst Historic Start

The Terrapins are 2-0 with two shutout victories for the first time since 2021 and their most goals through two games since 2013.

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Terrapins (2-0) are off to a historic pace in 2025. Kelsey Smith scored her second and third goals of the season, Lisa McIntyre recorded her second-career multi-goal match and Faith Luckey posted her second shutout in as many games as Maryland thumped Saint Francis 5-0 on Sunday evening at Ludwig Field. In scoring five goals on Sunday, the Terps netted their most goals in a game since Oct. 6, 2019, when they beat Illinois, 6-2. That game was also the last time Maryland two two players score multiple goals in a game (Adalee Broadbent and Alyssa Poarch).

The Terrapins are 2-0 under head coach Michael Marchiano in 2025, marking the first time since they've started a season with back-to-back wins — and shutouts — since 2021. Maryland's eight total goals through its first two matches are its most in over a decade (13 in 2013).

Maryland found the back of the net first in the 15th minute on a goal from McIntyre as she collided with the goalkeeper. Beautiful assists from both Smith and Peyton Bernard put the Terps ahead. Smith landed a goal of her own 10 minutes later. Feeds from McIntyre and Delaney DeMartino set Smith up for her second of the season as Maryland doubled its lead in the 25th minute.

Smith found her second goal of the first half in the 35th on an assist from Ellie Egeland. The Terrapins scored three goals in the first half for the second time in as many games in 2025.  Maryland took a 3-0 lead into halftime without allowing a shot on goal. The Terrapins recorded three goals in back-to-back first halves since at least 1996. The Terps' defense allowed Luckey to have a relatively uneventful first half, facing just one shot while Maryland tallied 16 in the first 45 minutes. She only needed one save in the shutout win.

Gemma Davitian recorded her first goal of the season in the 50th minute on a play she orchestrated alone. McIntyre netted her second of the night in the 56th minute on assists from Mia Mitchell and Ava Morales as Maryland's lead grew to 5-0, where it would stay until the final horn blew as the game ended early due to weather.  How it Happened
  • Davitian recorded Maryland's first shot in the fourth minute.
  • Bernard recorded a couple early shots, forcing saves from Saint Francis goalkeeper Emma Sawich.
  • McIntyre sank her first goal of the season and fifth of her career in the 15th minute to put Maryland on the board. She was assisted by Smith and Bernard.
  • Smith scored on assists from McIntyre and DeMartino in the 25th minute for her second of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Smith scored again in the 35th minute on a short shot following a feed from Egeland to record her first multi-goal game of her career.
  • Davitian scored her first goal of the season in the 50th minute, unassisted.
  • McIntyre recorded her second-career multi-goal match in the 56th minute.
Returning Success
  • McIntyre's fifth and sixth goals of her career came in her 20th start as a Maryland Terrapin.
  • Morales and Bernard both recorded career highs in shots with six and four, respectively.
  • Smith's five-point first half set a new career high for the redshirt junior captain.
  • McIntyre's five-point game set a new career high.
Growing in Goal
  • Luckey recorded a save in her second-career start.

Marchiano's Message
  • "I think the result is certainly positive. I think we started the game a little bit slow, but I think we got going. I was really happy with the way we played for the remainder of the first half and the way we continued in the second half. A good performance. Overall, a pretty complete performance tonight from the girls."
  • "I think that there's a good collective nature to the way we're building and attacking opponents. There's a couple different threats from the field for us. We have to continue to strike that right balance"
  • On leadership production: "It's everything. I'm happy that they're getting into good goal-scoring positions and I'm happy that they're finding the net."
  • On Luckey: "Faith is a calming presence. That's what we've seen from her. She gives stability and calm to the back line. I know we're going to get tested a lot more as we go on this season and hopefully some of the exposures in these first couple of games will prepare us well for that. Faith has been steady and we hope that continues."
Smith's Stellar Sunday
  • "We knew coming into this that we wanted to make a big impact on (Saint Francis) from the start, so it was nice to start off strong in the first half with (my) two goals."
  • "We know that we are stepping into that big role and us continuing to produce these goals for our team is keeping us strong."
Up Next
  • The Terps stay in College Park to wrap up their three-match homestand on Aug, 21, when they play UMBC. The match starts at 7 PM and will air on B1G+.
