COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland women's soccer (3-0) did something it hadn't done since 1996 on Thursday night at Ludwig Field as the Terps recorded their third-straight shutout win to open the season, 1-0 over UMBC (1-1-1).
Ellie Egeland got the scoring started in the 18th minute with her first-career goal. A corner kick from Ava Morales found the head of Alyssa Abramson and deflected to Egeland, who buried her milestone goal as Maryland took a 1-0 lead.Â
A dominant first half saw the Terps outshoot the Retrievers 16-1 in the first half and set up an easy first half for Faith Luckey, who posted her third-career shutout in as many starts on Thursday.Â
Maryland mainly dominated possession in the second half, allowing just two shots in the night, neither of which found their way past Luckey.

Marchiano's Message:
- "I think from a results standpoint (the homestand) has been fantastic. Tonight, the game was a little bit closer and a little bit hectic toward the end, but I think while we want positive results, we want to be tested a little bit and I think tonight we had good exposure to that."
- "A positive result for sure from a results standpoint, but we need to focus on performing at a higher level as we continue to go through the season."
- On Luckey: "Stable from her. We got from her what we needed in specific moments and we're going to continue to need a lot more stability from her."
- On taking to the road: "I would love to play at Ludwig every week. There's no doubt about that, but I think our team needs to figure out how to go on the road to a place where we're less comfortable."
Egeland's Excellence:
- "I feel like lately I've had a lot of chances so I feel like this has been a long time coming. I got some minutes last year, but this is my sophomore year and I feel like I'm getting a lot more time on the field so it's more time to prove myself. I'm just very very happy that I finally got the result."
- "I couldn't have done it without my team. The build-up to get to the goal in the corner was everything I needed to get in the back of the net. Alyssa's header was almost right to my feet. It was a given goal, basically."
- "It's nice to have a goal under my belt before we head into some harder competition. It's definitely something I think will help me for the future."Â
Up Next:
- The Terps take to the road for the first time this season for a meeting at Old Dominion on Aug. 24. The match starts at 6 PM and will air on ESPN+.
