Maci Bradford's Two-Goal Day Leads No. 10 Maryland to 3-1 Win Over Pennsylvania

The Terps opened the Terrapin Invitational with a dominant win on their home turf.

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maci Bradford outscored the Quakers on Friday as the No. 10 Terps (3-2) defeated Pennsylvania (1-2) 3-1 to open the Terrapin Invitational.

The Terps struck early, scoring on a corner in the second minute. Bradford scored her second goal of the season while Ella Gaitan picked up her first assist to put Maryland up 1-0 in the initial minutes. Pennsylvania's Honor Roberts evened the match a few minutes later. Bradford got loose in the Quakers' defense in the 42nd minute and buried her second goal of the day as Maia Adamson tallied her first assist of the year. Two minutes later, Maddie Vasilios scored her first of the year on Callie Rodgers' first assist to give the Terps a cushion.  Maryland didn't allow as much as a shot in the second half as the Terps held on for their 21st win in a Terrapin Invitational since 2013 and their fifth straight regular-season win at home.

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Maryland applied early pressure with a pair of penalty corners in the second minute.
  • Bradford scored in the second minute as Gaitan picked up an assist.
  • The Terps fought off the Quakers' first corner in the fifth minute.
  • Pennsylvania scored in the sixth minute to tie the contest.
  • Gaitan wrung a shot off the post in the 12th minute.
  • Maryland outshot Pennsylvania 4-3 in the first quarter, but the two teams were even at 1-1 after 15 minutes of play.
2nd Quarter:
  • Bradford forced Pennsylvania to make a diving save on a shot early in the quarter.
  • Maryland fought off a pair of Penn corners in the half's final minutes.
  • Alyssa Klebasko made six saves in the first half, five of them coming in the closing moments of the second quarter.
3rd Quarter:
  • Maryland had a great look on a corner midway through the 3rd quarter, but Pennsylvania's defense remained stout.
  • Bradford scored her third of the year in the 42nd minute on an assist from Adamson.
  • Vasilios added on in the 44th minute from Rodgers to extend the lead.
  • Pennsylvania did not record a shot in the 3rd quarter.
  • Maryland took a 3-1 lead into the final frame.
4th Quarter:
  • The Terps played a heavily-defensive final frame, holding the Quakers to zero shots in the quarter or the second half.
Missy Meharg's Message:
  • "I thought the second half for Maryland was brilliant. We didn't give up a defensive penalty corner against us. We totally took control. For us, it's about how we press and how we play defense in our front field."
  • "We knew it was going to be a tactical game. It was a great one. I think Penn is going to surprise a lot of people."
  • "Vasilios is just a special girl. She's a really big part of the team's chemistry. She has that little bit of Spanish excitement and music and flair to her that's very contagious."
  • "Bradford's part of our leadership group. She's a quiet athlete, but she speaks in her own way."
Bradford's Big Day:
  • "I just knew I needed to do my job and just get my touch in and get the goal in."
  • "It was 1-1 going into the second half, but we were totally dominating, but we just needed to do the simple hockey passing. We were dribbling a little in the first half, but in the second half we were passing, playing more together. The defense, they were literally a brick wall back there. Nobody was getting past them."
  • "Corners are something we've been working on a lot since our first game. I think we always talk about 'hey, just do your job'. I think even though they weren't perfect, I'm glad we got some shots out of them, but I think just doing our job and being detailed is very important."
