Ella Gaitan's Last-Minute Goal Pushes No. 10 Maryland Past No. 13 Saint Joseph's 1-0

A last-minute penalty corner gave the Terps all the scoring they'd need in a Sunday win over the ranked Hawks

| Box Score 2 COLLEGE PARK, MD - Ella Gaitan found the back of the net in the final minute of play to put No. 10 Maryland (4-2) past No. 13 Saint Joseph's (3-2) on a heroic penalty corner.

The ranked clash was a defensive battle through and through. Both teams recorded just two shots in the first half as the two battled for possession and found their rhythms.

Maryland's offense found its stride in the 3rd quarter, outshooting the Hawks 5-1 and creating several scoring opportunities. Despite the scoreless tie, the Terps carried momentum into the final frame, continuing to barrage the Hawks with shots.

Missy Meharg's Message:
  • "I think it's patience, but I think it's also staying entertained. This is the game. All you've got to do is keep balls out and outscore by one and that'll be the outcome. It couldn't have happened at a better time."
  • "I applaud Saint Joseph's. That is a really good field hockey team. They're speed in the midfield was perhaps a little bit more than ours, but I thought we handled that really well. That could have been very dangerous and it wasn't."
Gaitan's Game-Winning Goal:
  • "This goal was super important, especially the way I scored off a corner, off a drag. We've been working a lot on our APCs. That's an area we need to get better at. It was just awesome. You play for minutes like that, so it was a really good feeling"
  • "We were really trying to build energy off getting those late scoring opportunities to begin with. In the end, it worked out. Just keep knocking on the door until it opens. That was our mentality for that."
Klebasko's Confidence:
  • "We were really sound defensively. We knew they were a fast team, but I think we did a good job setting up quickly, organizing, marking players and ultimately shutting it down."
  • "I think confidence is contagious. I think it starts in the back and works its way up the field. We never give up. Even though it's late in the game, we're going to fight until that last second and that was evident today."
Numbers to Know:
  • 6: Maryland improves to 6-0 all-time over the Hawks.
  • 6: The Terps have won their last six regular season matches in College Park, dating back to last season.
  • 13: Klebasko posted her 13th-career shutout.
  • 22: Maryland improves 22-2 in the Terrapin Invitational since 2013.
