No. 12 Terps Grind Out 62-55 Road Conference Win Over USC

Maryland won a back-and-forth affair over the Trojans on Thursday night to kick off its West Coast road trip.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The No. 12 Terps won a 62-55 game over USC on Thursday night for their fifth conference win of the season. The contest featured 14 lead changes, but 20 free throws in the second half helped the pendulum swing Maryland's way as the Terps started their West Coast road trip with a gritty victory.  Maryland's (17-2, 5-2 Big Ten) defense kept the Trojans at bay for the majority of the contest. The Terps held USC (10-7, 2-4 Big Ten) to 16% from three-point range (on 32 attempts) and 28% from the floor overall. USC's Jazzy Davidson was held scoreless after the first quarter. The Terps limited the Trojans to eight points in the second quarter, marking the 19th time Maryland's kept an opponent under 10 points in a quarter this season.  Addi Mack led Maryland with 12 points while Yarden Garzon and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu each had 10. Kyndal Walker and the Terps had a good night from the charity stripe as they took advantage of USC fouls and miscues. Walker shot 9-of-10 from the line while Maryland went 22-of-26 overall.

Ozzy-Momodu led the charge on the boards with nine rebounds while Oluchi Okananwa and Saylor Poffenbarger grabbed seven and six, respectively. Okananwa surpassed 500-career rebounds in the win. Maryland stays out west to take on No. 3 UCLA on Sunday afternoon.  How It Happened:

  • "Just really proud of our program. Any time you can go on the road and be able to get a road win, they're precious, especially in our league."
  • "I was happy that we could rely on our defense in this game, because this was a game that probably wasn't the prettiest from an offensive perspective. Defensively, I thought we did some really good things."

  • "We had to have it. I thought we did a much better job in the second half. We stopped fouling and we got better, communication-wise."
  • "We were really aggressive in trying to get to the free throw line."
  • "I like where we're trending. I love where our bench is at and the confidence they're playing with."
Mack Attack
  • "A big thing for us has been stressing the communication piece and staying together. I thought in the game, we did a good job of that, no matter what adversity we faced. We all came together."
  • "In the second half, we really locked in on the gameplan and how we do that with one another, and I think that really helped us get the win."
  • "Our offense wasn't as strong as it usually is, but that defensive piece was really strong."
Ozzy-Momodu's Observations:
  • "We were all locked in on defense. Communication has been a big thing in practice."
