No. 12 Terps Fall At No. 3 UCLA To Finish West Coast Trip

Oluchi Okananwa scored 25 points in a battle between two of the Big Ten's best teams.

LOS ANGELES, CA — In a battle of two of the Big Ten's best teams, No. 3 UCLA defeated No. 12 Maryland, 97-67, on Sunday evening at Pauley Pavilion. The Terps (17-3, 5-3 Big Ten) fell for just the third time this season to one of the nation's top programs to wrap up their West Coast road trip.

Oluchi Okananwa continued her impressive debut season in the Big Ten with 25 points, five rebounds, and two steals. She's scored in double figures in all but three of her games this season, and has scored 20+ points eight times this season. She currently ranks in the top-10 in the conference in points, field goals, free throws, offensive rebounds, and steals.  The Bruins used a strong third quarter, in which they outscored Maryland 26-12, to pull away and secure their 17th win and stay undefeated in Big Ten play. They got 22 points from Gabriela Jaquez as they moved to 8-0 at home this season.

Saylor Poffenbarger tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists against UCLA. She's now scored in double figures eight times this season and four times in Big Ten play. Addi Mack added 12 points to her freshman season in the only nationally-televised women's college basketball on NBC Sports this year. How It Happened:

  • A Poffenbarger jumper got the Terps' scoring started.
  • Mack got on the board with an early layup.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Poffebarger and Mack kept the Terps within five, 13-8, at the first media timeout.
  • Yarden Garzon made a three midway through the quarter.
  • Okananwa got on the board with a three.
  • UCLA led 25-17 after the first quarter.
2nd Quarter:
  • A Mack jumper started the second-quarter scoring.
  • Poffenbarger reached nine points with a three to cut the deficit to 27-22

  • Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu's first basket of the game got Maryland to 30 points.
  • Okananwa hit a three to become the first Terp in double figures.
  • UCLA led 47-35 at halftime.
3rd Quarter:
  • Poffenbarger scored Maryland' first points of the quarter to reach double figures.
  • UCLA's lead grew on a 10-2 Bruins' run to start the frame.
  • Kyndal Walker hit a pair of free throws late in the quarter.
  • UCLA took a 73-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter:

Brenda Frese's Breakdown:
  • "Obviously, we don't like to take a loss of this magnitude, but I think it helps, having some perspective for us."
  • "I thought we did some things well in the first half."
  • "We had a really difficult time today, but this is still a young team. We have five freshmen going against a Final Four team. They play smart and make you pay for every mistake. They wore us out."
  • "We made a lot of errors that we typically don't make."
  • "When Oluchi lets the game come to her, really good things happen."
  • "The beauty of the league is there's always another opportunity. We'll get home and get ready for Iowa."
