No. 15 Terps Outlasted By No. 10 Iowa, 85-78, In Overtime

Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu and Oluchi Okananwa both posted double-doubles in an instant-classic in College Park.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 15 Maryland rallied with 34 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 17-point deficit and send a game with the No. 10 Hawkeyes to overtime. Heroic performances from Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu and Oluchi Okananwa created a nail-biter at XFINITY Center on Thursday night, but Iowa outlasted Maryland to escape with an 85-78 Big Ten win. Ozzy-Momodu posted her fourth-career double-double with a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Hawkeyes. She helped Maryland (17-4, 5-4 Big Ten) outrebound Iowa as one of two Terps with double-digit rebounds.  Despite being held scoreless in the first half, Okananwa erupted for 14 points in the second half and overtime. She drained a clutch three-point shot with six seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Okananwa grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds on a night where she was honored pregame with a pair of basketballs, commemorating her reaching 1,000-career points and 500-career rebounds earlier this season. Yarden Garzon moved her Big Ten-leading three-point total to 59 during her 12-point night. She scored in double figures for the 15th time this season and the 79th time in her collegiate career. Kyndal Walker posted a career-high 15 points as Mir McLean grabbed her 500th-career rebound in a tense night in College Park.  Despite not taking a free throw until the third quarter, Iowa hit eight three-pointers and got 20 points from Ava Heiden as the Hawkeyes escaped with an overtime win to stay unbeaten in Big Ten play. Despite the loss, Maryland added 78 points to its Big Ten-leading 1,773 season total. The Terps also rank first in the conference in rebounds (898) and made free throws (357). Maryland is back in action and will celebrate its international student-athletes against No. 25 Washington on Jan. 28.

How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu got the Terps' scoring started with an early layup.
  • Kyndal Walker got on the board with a mid-range jumper.
  • Garzon gave the Terps' their first lead, 8-7, with her first field goal. 
  • Iowa used a 9-0 run to build a 16-10 lead. 
  • The Hawkeyes led 16-12 after 10 minutes of action.
2nd Quarter:
  • Ozzy-Momodu knocked down a pair of free throws for the quarter's first points.
  • Marya Boiko's first points kept Maryland within six, 24-18, midway through the quarter.
  • Garzon knocked down a jumper for her third field goal of the night. 
  • A Garzon three brought Maryland within four, 29-25, with two minutes to play.
  • Iowa led 33-27 at the half.
3rd Quarter:
  • Ozzy-Momodu became the first Terp to double figures with a layup.
  • The Terps used a 7-0 run to work it back to a 34-38 Iowa lead.
  • Garzon hit a three to reach double figures midway through the quarter.
  • A pair of Boiko free throws cut the deficit to 44-39 with two minutes to play.
  • Iowa took a 48-39 lead into the final frame.
4th Quarter:
  • Ozzy-Momodu sealed her double-double with an early rebound. 
  • Walker reached double figures with a layup and drew a foul to cut into the Iowa lead.
  • Iowa pulled away with an 8-2 run to start the half.
  • Ozzy-Momodu set her new career high with a late layup.
  • Saylor Poffenbarger hit a pair of late threes to bring Maryland within six, 68-62.
  • Okananwa tied the game at 73-73 with a three with six seconds left and force overtime.
Overtime:
  • Okananwa scored a layup for the frame's first points.
  • Iowa pulled away with a 8-1 run.
  • The Hawkeyes held on for the 85-78 win.
Double-Digit Days:
  • Ozzy-Momodu (18 points) reached double figures for the 10th time in her career as she posted her fourth-career double-double with a career-high 18 points.

  • Garzon (12 points) scored in double figures for the 15th time this season and the 79th time in her career.

  • Okananwa continued her impressive debut season in the Big Ten with 14 points and 12 on Thursday for her eighth-career double-double.
  • In nine conference games this season, she's averaging 20.2 points per game.
