Maryland Suffers Road Defeat To No. 10 Michigan State

The Terps return to College Park for a clash with No. 4 Purdue on Feb. 1.

EAST LANSING, MI — The Terps dropped a tough contest with the No. 10 Michigan State Spartans, 91-48, on the road on Saturday afternoon. Maryland fell to 9-11 and 1-8 in Big Ten play while Michigan State — the No. 11 NET team and No. 9 Kenpom squad — moved to 18-2 and 8-1 in conference play. 

Elijah Saunders led the Terps with 13 points. David Coit's 11 first-half points were tied for the most by any player as he clinched his 13th double-figure game of the season. Across his last four games, he's scored 99 points. He pitched in three rebounds and three assists on Saturday. 

The No. 10 Spartans used a 18-0 run in the first half to build a lead and protected it en route to their sixth straight win and 11th at home this season. Michigan State got 17 points from Jeremy Fears Jr. in the victory. 

Maryland got eight points and six rebounds from Solomon Washington in the loss. The Terps have a week off before they take on No. 4 Purdue in College Park on Feb. 1.

How It Happened:
1st Half:
  • A pair of Coit free throws got Maryland's scoring started. 
  • Saunders got on the board with an early jumper.
  • MSU used an early 18-0 run to climb to a 20-4 lead. 
  • Washington drilled a three to get on the board. 
  • The Terps worked back into the contest with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a trio of Coit field goals.
  • Michigan State added to its lead with another 9-0 run. 
  • Coit hit a three to reach double figures late in the half.
  • MSU led 46-23 at halftime.
2nd Half:
  • A Washington layup got the second half's scoring started. 
  • Isaiah Watts hit an early three.
  • Michigan State went on a 15-0 run to put the game on ice midway through the second half. 
  • The Spartans closed out a 91-48 win.

  • Saunders (13 points) tallied his eighth double-figure game of the year and his 27th of his career.
  • Coit (11 points) scored 10+ points for the 13th time this season and the 69th time in his career.

  • He's scored 99 across his last four games, averaging 24.75 during that span.
