No. 16 Terps Fall 83-80 To No. 25 Washington In Double-Overtime Thriller

The Huskies outlasted the Terps despite Saylor Poffenbarger's double-double and Yarden Garzon's 24 points.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 25 Washington outlasted No. 16 Maryland, 83-80, in a double-overtime thriller at XFINITY Center on Wednesday night. Saylor Poffenbarger recorded her 20th-career double-double, and Yarden Garzon dropped 24 points, but 10 three-pointers from the Huskies helped them escape College Park with their first ranked win of the season.

Poffenbarger scored 16 points and grabbed 14 boards in her second double-double of the season and 20th of her career. She hit a clutch free throw with 0.3 seconds left in the first overtime period to force an additional frame on Wednesday night. 
Yarden Garzon scored nine of her 24 points in the second quarter to close out a half that saw the Terps hold UW to just 23 points. Garzon hit four threes to push her Big Ten-leading season total to 63 and scored 15+ points for the 10th time this season. Addi Mack had a strong night with 20 points. She hit a trio of three-pointers in the opening quarter as Maryland built an early lead and scored five in the first overtime period to extend the game. She scored in double digits for the 13th time in her impressive freshman season.  Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. She and Poffenbarger both snagged double-digit boards to mark just the second time this season that multiple Terps have had 10+ rebounds. Ozzy-Momodu was one of five International Terps on Maryland's roster honored at the game. 

Washington got a career-high 38 points from Sayvia Sellers on a night where Maryland welcomed former coaches Tina Langley and David Adkins back to College Park. The Terps are back in action on Saturday against Oregon at 5 PM after playing in back-to-back Big Ten overtime games for the first time in program history. 

How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Garzon got the night started with a three-point basket. 
  • Poffenbarger and Okananwa got on the board with early jumpers.
  • Ozzy-Momodu's first points put the Terps up 9-5 midway through the quarter.
  • Mack drained a three for her first points of the night. 
  • Mack hit another three to put Maryland up 15-9 with three minutes to play. 
  • Mack's third three of the opening quarter built an 18-11 lead. 
  • Kyndal Walker got on the board late in the opening quarter.
  • The Terps led 22-11 after 10 minutes of action.
2nd Quarter:
  • Walker and Ozzy-Momodu scored early buckets.
  • Garzon's second three kept Maryland up 29-21 midway through the quarter.
  • Garzon drained her third three of the night as Maryland went up 33-23 with two minutes in the half.
  • Garzon became the first player to double figures in the final minute.
  • The Terps led 35-23 at halftime. 
3rd Quarter:
  • Okananwa drove to the basket for the Terps' first points of the second half.
  • Ozzy-Momodu grabbed a layup and put it back for two as Maryland went up 39-29.
  • Washington went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 39-39 midway through the quarter. 
  • Poffenbarger put Maryland back ahead with a second-chance layup.
  • Washington took its first lead late in the quarter.
  • Garzon put in a layup in the final seconds to tie the game at 46-46 heading into the final frame.
4th Quarter:
  • Poffenbarger scored Maryland's first points of the fourth quarter. 
  • Poffenbarger put the Terps back in front, 52-50, halfway through the frame.
  • Mack reached double figures with a pair of free throws. 
  • Mack tied the game at 56-56 with a minute and a half to play.
  • Walker put Maryland on top with a pair of free throws.
  • Poffenbarger hit a free throw to clinch her double-double.
  • UW tied the game with a three-pointer with 59 seconds to play to force overtime.
First Overtime:
  • Garzon rolled in a layup for the first points of overtime.
  • UW took a 62-61 lead with a three-point basket. 
  • Garzon's fourth three of the night put Maryland back up, 64-62, with three minutes to play.
  • Washington took a 68-66 lead with 1:30 to play. 
  • Mack created an and-one play to regain the 69-68 lead. 
  • Mack put the Terps up 71-70 with a minute to play. 
  • Poffenbarger hit a free throw to tie the game at 72-72 after the first overtime period. 
Second Overtime:
  • Washington's 10th three-pointer of the night put UW up 75-74 early in the period.
  • The Huskies took an 81-77 lead with 1:35 to play.
  • Garzon knocked down a pair of free throws to halve the deficit. 
  • Walker made it a one-point game with a free throw with 30 seconds to play.
  • UW took an 82-20 lead with 16.6 seconds to play.
  • Washington closed out the 83-80 win.
