Three Terps Land on Tewaaraton Watch List

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Kori Edmondson, Kayla Gilmore and JJ Suriano of the No. 6 Maryland women's lacrosse team were named to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Tuesday evening.

Edmondson returns to College Park for her final year. Edmondson earned First Team honors and preseason honors by USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse.

Edmondson was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year last season and was a 2025 Tewaaraton Top 25 finalist. She earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors and led the Terrapins' offense during a standout season. Edmondson tallied 65 points, including 54 goals, and was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week five times. She concluded the year with All-American honors from USA Lacrosse, the IWLCA, and Inside Lacrosse. She also earned Midseason First Team All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse and a spot on the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.

JJ Suriano was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and the IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by both organizations.

The junior goalkeeper opened the season with a standout performance against No. 13 Syracuse, posting a .762 save percentage in the Terps' road victory. Suriano held the Orange scoreless in the first quarter and recorded 16 saves on 21 shots faced, allowing just five goals in the win.

Last season, Suriano started all 21 games last season in her first year in the cage. She was named to the 2025 All-Big Ten Tournament Team and earned 2025 Inside Lacrosse All-American Honorable Mention honors. Suriano posted a 9.61 goals-against average and recorded 180 saves on the season.

She led the Terps to the Big Ten Championship game with some of the best performances of her career. In the championship game, Suriano turned in a career outing with 18 saves in a narrow 8–7 loss to Northwestern. The 18 saves tied a Big Ten Tournament record and marked the most by a Terp in a single game since Megan Taylor recorded 20 against Florida in 2017.

Gilmore will enter her sophomore season after being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. She made an immediate impact for the Terps, recording 14 goals and nine assists, while playing a key role in the draw circle with 73 draw controls. Gilmore earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors, was named to the inaugural All-Freshman Team, and was ranked the No. 7 freshman nationally by Inside Lacrosse.

Maryland has won eight of the last 13 Tewaaraton awards, with Megan Taylor becoming the first goalie in lacrosse history to win the award in 2019. Before that, Zoe Stukenberg took home the prestigious award in 2017, Taylor Cummings won three straight from 2014-16 and Katie Schwarzmann became the first two-time winner for Maryland in 2012-13. Caitlyn McFadden started the eight-for-13 streak for Maryland, garnering the award in 2010. Jen Adams won the inaugural Tewaaraton in 2001.

In the 19 years of the award, Maryland has won nine times, the most of any school and has had 26 finalists, including at least one in 16-of-17 seasons under head coach Cathy Reese. Most recently, Aurora Cordingley was named a finalist in 2022, where she totaled 118 points (67 goals, 51 assists).

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Players not named to this initial list will have opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch List additions will be announced on March 5 and March 26, before the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees on April 16. Nominees can be players from the Watch Lists or not from the Watch Lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.

Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 7. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season
