Ryan Costello slugged his first-career homer in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

WILMINGTON, NC — The Terps dropped an 8-4 decision to UNC Wilmington in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader despite Ryan Costello's three-run homer. Maryland (1-1) will look for the series win in a rubber match with the Seahawks (1-1) on Saturday night.

Freshman righty Nic Morlang made his first collegiate start on the bump for the Terps. He fanned four across his first two innings of work before UNCW broke the ice with the game's first run in the third. Morlang's debut ended after three solid innings of work.

The Seahawks got their bats going as Maryland turned to its bullpen. A trio of walks in the fourth inning hurt the Terps as a pair of Seahawks scored on a Kevin Jones double. A trio of two-out knocks the following frame opened a 6-0 UNCW advantage. Maryland used five arms in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Maryland chipped back in the sixth inning. Brayden Martin reached and swiped his fourth bag of the young season before Paul Jones II brought him home with an RBI groundout to put the Terps on the board. A few batters later, Costello unloaded his first homer of the season, blasting a three-run shot to right field, plating three and bringing Maryland back within two.

The Terps threatened again in the eighth as a pair of runners reached, but UNCW added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth and closed out the series-evening win. The two teams will battle again on Saturday evening in a rubber-match contest.
