No. 6 Terps Dominate In 17-9 Win Over No. 13 Virginia

Kristen Shanahan tallied a career-high six assists while three Terps netted hat tricks in the Valentine’s Day Win.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 6 Maryland had a lovely Valentine's Day, defeating No. 13 Virginia 17-9 in the Terps' home opener. Kristen Shanahan led the way with a goal and six assists as the Terps moved to 2-0 on the fresh season.

Eight Terps had multi-point games against the ranked Cavaliers (0-3), highlighted by hat tricks from Kori Edmondson and Jordyn Lipkin, and Keeley Block. Maryland dominated Virginia, outshooting the Cavaliers 30-24 in the Saturday win. Three of Edmondson's four goals came in the first half as she passed head coach Cathy Reese for 19th on the all-time goals record list. A trio of firsts put the Terps ahead in the opening quarter. Lexi Dupak's first goal of the season opened the scoring in the first minute of play before Edmondson and Jordyn Lipkin recorded their first goals of 2026. Shanahan assisted on all three goals and netted one of her own as the Terps built a 4-1 first-quarter lead.

Shanahan made sure to spread the love around on Saturday, dishing a career-high six assists in the win. With three in the opening quarter, she recorded Maryland's first three-assist quarter since Eloise Clevenger in 2024 as she also recorded the Terps' first six-assist game since Clevenger in the same game One game after her five-goal performance against Syracuse, Lauren LaPointe pitched in a goal and three assists against Virginia. Ava Meyn recorded her first multi-goal game as a Terp in the dominant win. Lipkin clinched a hat trick of her own during a 7-1 run that spanned the second and third quarters and saw the Terps take a dominant 13-6 lead over Virginia. Block closed out her hat trick in the fourth quarter. A game after winning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, JJ Suriano made nine saves as her Terps cruised to a 2-0 start with a pair of ranked wins.  How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Dupak scored in the opening minute to put the Terps ahead 1-0 early.
  • Suriano made her first save in the fifth minute. 
  • Virginia tied the game nine minutes in. 
  • Edmondson put the Terps back in front with her first goal of the season.
  • Lipkin extended the lead to 3-1 with her first of the season.
  • Shanahan scored on a free position shot to make it 4-1 11 minutes in.
2nd Quarter:
  • Suriano made a save on a free-position shot in the opening minute. 
  • Virginia opened the second-quarter scoring four minutes into the frame.
  • LaPointe scored her sixth of the season to make it 5-2.
  • The Cavaliers cut the Maryland lead to 5-3 five minutes in. 
  • Virginia scored again halfway through the frame. 
  • Dupak's second of the year snapped a 3-0 UVA run. 
  • Virginia got its fifth goal with 3:36 left in the half.
  • Edmondson's second of the game extended the lead to 7-5.
  • Lipkin's second of the day made it 8-5
  • Block's first goal as a Terp made it 9-5 before Edmondson beat the buzzer to seal her hat trick, giving Maryland a 10-6 halftime lead. 
3rd Quarter:
  • Meyn scored her second of the season to open the third-quarter scoring.
  • Lipkin secured her hat trick as the Terps went up 12-6.
  • Meyn's second goal kept the Terps rolling. 
  • Virginia scored halfway through the quarter.
  • Suriano made a save with five minutes to play.
  • Block's second goal of the day put the Terps up 14-7 with four minutes to play.
  • Edmondson's fourth of the day extended the Maryland lead to 15-7, which the Terps took into the fourth quarter. 
4th Quarter:
  • Kayla Gilmore's second goal of the season marked the first goal of the frame. 
  • Virginia scored a pair of free possession goals to make it a 16-9 Terps lead. 
  • Block clinched her hat trick with two minutes to play.
  • Maryland closed out a dominant 17-9 win.
Multi-Point Terps:
  • Shanahan (one goal, six assists) picked up her 23rd-career multi-point game.
  • Edmondson (four goals) tied her career high in her 43rd-career multi-goal game.
  • Block (three goals, one assist) recorded her 29th-career multi-goal game and her 37th-career multi-point game.
  • Lipkin (three goals, one assist) tallied her 25th-career multi-goal game and her 29th multi-point game of her career.
  • Meyn (two goals) netted her first-career multi-goal game. 
  • Dupak (two goals) recorded her first-career multi-goal game.
  • LaPointe (one goal, three assists) recorded her 13th-career multi-point game.
  • Gilmore (one goal, one assist) recorded her sixth-career multi-point game.
Rivalry Renewed:
  • Saturday marked the 30th all-time meeting between Maryland and Virginia, with the Terps winning 22 of the previous matchups. 
  • Maryland improved to 10-4 against Virginia in College Park and 17-4 over the Cavaliers under Reese.
  • The Terps' largest win in series history was a 16-8 victory in 2011.
Home Cooking:
  • Maryland is 179-12 (.937) at home under head coach Cathy Reese, with eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 12 seasons (2013, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '21).
  • The Terps have only lost two conference home games under Reese.
Season-Opening Success:
  • Maryland improved to 18-2 in home openers under Reese.
