Maryland Baseball To Begin Home Campaign Against Georgetown On Tuesday

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland Terrapins (2-1) are set to host Georgetown (1-2) in their home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. This marks the 92nd matchup between the Terps and the Hoyas as the Terps lead the Hoyas all time 65-26 in this DMV series. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and entrance to the game is free of charge. Fans who can't make it can catch the game on B1G+ or listen on the Maryland Baseball Network.

  • The Terrapins opened their season with a 2-1 series victory at UNC Wilmington against the Seahawks, scoring 14-total runs. 
  • Redshirt freshman, Ryan Costello, started his Maryland career off hot with a three-run home run in game two of the series. He totaled a team-leading five RBIs in the Valentine's Day weekend series. 
  • Sophomore catcher, Rylen Stockton, also had a great start to his career with Maryland, hitting the first home run for the team this season in game one of the series. He had two RBIs and a 1.667 OPS over the three-game series. 
  • Right-handed-pitcher, Logan Hastings, had a dominant showing to close out the series. He earned a win after pitching five innings and allowing zero hits and zero runs, with four strikeouts.
  • Maryland has opened to a 2-1 record for a fourth consecutive season (2023-26).

  • During his tenure as both an assistant and head coach, Matt Swope has helped elevate Maryland's offense to one of the best in the conference. Over the past five seasons (2021-25), the Terps have ranked at the top of the Big Ten in nearly every major offensive category, including home runs (532), on-base percentage (.407), slugging percentage (.509), runs (2,299), RBI (2,141), walks (1,567), and grand slams (27).
  • That success has translated nationally as well, as Maryland ranks among the top Power Four programs over that span, placing seventh in home runs, third in on-base percentage, fifth in slugging percentage, eighth in runs, eighth in RBI, seventh in walks, and sixth in grand slams.

  • Head coach Matt Swope has assembled one of the nation's top freshman classes, earning a spot on Baseball America's Top 25 Recruiting Classes list.
  • Swope, who has emphasized keeping top talent in-state, did exactly that with this freshman class, securing three of Maryland's top 13 players according to Perfect Game.

  • The three Terrapins featured on the Big Ten Baseball Players to Watch List: Ty Kaunas, David Mendenez, and Lance Williams – all contributed to the series win against the Seahawks.
  • Lance Williams who pitched the first game of the season had an excellent showing through the five innings he pitched. He tallied six strikeouts with only one earned run while earning his first win of the season.
  • Ty Kaunas hit .333 over the weekend and tied Brayden Martin and Ryan Costello for a team-leading four hits throughout the series. 
  • David Mendez had a crucial RBI in the eighth inning of game three to extend the Terrapins' lead to two. 
Stanley Bobb Baseball Player Development Center
  • On, Jan. 14, 2025, Maryland unveiled the new Stanley Bobb Baseball Performance Center. This will serve as the new indoor training facility for the Maryland Baseball program.
  • This new state-of-the-art facility will allow baseball student-athletes the opportunity to train year round in a controlled environment, allowing them to continue to hone their skills regardless of the conditions.
  • The 8,500 square foot facility will have defined spaces for both pitchers and hitters in a climate controlled environment. The facility features state-of-the-art technology.
  • This project is one of the many as part of Maryland's Building Champions initiative, a campaign that enables investment in facility renovation and enhancement.
  • The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
