Mills tallied the most points by a Terp freshman since 2015 in the loss.

EVANSTON, IL — Maryland fell 78-74 on Wednesday night to Northwestern in a Big Ten clash. Andre Mills scored a career-high 39 points, but a 22-4 second-half run from the Wildcats helped them secure their third conference win of the season. The Terps dropped to 10-16 (3-12 Big Ten) with the loss.

Mills had a monster night for Maryland, scoring a career-high 39 points as he recorded his fifth double-figure performance in his last six games. He scored the Terps' first eight points of the game, reached double figures in the first nine minutes, and became just the third Terp this season to score 20+ in the opening frame with his 22-point half. He shot 6-9 from three-point range and 9-9 from the charity stripe in his massive Wednesday.

Mills logged the sixth game this season with 30 or more points by a Terp, joining David Coit, who has four and Pharrel Payne, who had one earlier in the year. Mills' big night marked the second straight season a Terp freshman has scored 30 in a game, following Derik Queen's 31-point performance against Michigan last season.

Mills' 39 points marked the most by a Maryland freshman since Diamond Stone scored 39 against Penn State in 2015 (which is the most by any Terp freshman) and sealed just the fourth time a Terp freshman has surpassed 30 points in a game since 1994. Mills scored over half of Maryland's points on Wednesday night and tied for 10th-most in a game by any Terp in program history.

Solomon Washington grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, which tied his career high, to secure his ninth double-digit rebound game of the season. Collin Metcalf collected eight boards to match his season high as Maryland outgained the host Wildcats 36-24 on the glass. Washington recorded his seventh-career double-double with 11 points.

Northwestern used a 22-4 run in the second half to pull away from the Terps and move to 11-16 (3-13 Big Ten) on the season. The Wildcats hit 12 three-pointers in their win. Maryland is back in action in College Park against Washington on Feb. 21.

How it Happened:
1st Half:

Maryland got on the board with a three-pointer from Mills in the opening minute.
Mills' second three-pointer of the first three minutes put Maryland ahead 6-5.
Washington got on the board with a dunk to become the Terps' first non-Mills scorer.
Back-to-back baskets from David Coit brought Maryland within two, 16-14, seven minutes in.
Mills reached double figures with a layup less than nine minutes into the contest.
Mills drained a three to cut Northwestern's lead to 27-22 with six minutes to play.
Mills reached 20 points with a layup, becoming Maryland's third scorer this season with 20+ in the first half.
Metcalf threw a dunk down to bring Maryland within a point with a minute to play.
Northwestern led 35-34 at the half.

2nd Half:

Mills set a new career high with an early three that put Maryland up 39-38.
Isaiah Watts hit a three to put Maryland ahead 43-42 four minutes into the half.
A physical drive from Darius Adams built a 47-44 advantage.
Northwestern used four three-pointers amidst a 14-0 run to grab a 58-50 lead with nine minutes to play.
Mills hit his fifth three to reach 28 points on the night.
Watts' second three brought Maryland to a 66-57 deficit with 6:30 to go.
The Terps held the Wildcats without a field goal for over six minutes down the stretch.
Northwestern closed out the 78-74 win.

Mills (39 points) logged his 14th double-figure game of his freshman season and his second with 20+ points.
Washington (11 points) scored in double figures for the 11th time this season in his seventh-career double doubles. He has 28 games with 10+ points in his career.

Mills has forced his way onto the scene as of late, scoring in double figures in five of his past six games and averaging 18.8 points during that span.
