No. 14 Maryland Welcomes Northwestern Wednesday

COLLEGE PARK, MD --  The 14th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will host Northwestern on Wednesday, Feb. 25 in a 6:30 p.m. matchup at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, click here.

Maryland will be celebrating Black History Month at Wednesday's game. J Paul, a contestant on The Voice, will wing Lift Every Voice and Sing and the national anthem prior to tipoff. There will be a Divine Nine strolling presentation during halftime. Wednesday's game is also Mir McLean bobblehead night. Select fans in attendance will receive a scratch off ticket upon entry into the arena. and 100 lucky fans will take home a bobblehead.

2025-26 STORYLINES

What's UP
  • Maryland is coming off of a dominant 99-66 win over Purdue on Senior Day Sunday. Oluchi Okananwa scored 26 points to lead six Terrapins in double figures.

  • According to the NET rankings, No. 14 Maryland has wins at No. 8 Minnesota, at No. 13 Michigan State, vs. No. 16 Kentucky, at No. 17 Ohio State, at No. 21 USC and at No. 28 Nebraska. The Terps are 6-5 in Quad 1 games. Maryland has 5 Quad 1 road wins.
  • Maryland is ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press poll released Feb. 23 and No. 13 in the USA Today Sports WBB Coaches Poll released Feb. 24.

  • The Terps have four freshmen averaging 11 minutes per game or more in Big Ten play in Addi Mack (28.8 mpg), Kyndal Walker (22.2 mpg), Rainey Welson (13.0) and Marya Boiko (11.6 mpg). Redshirt freshman Breanna Williams has each seen action in 12 of 16 conference games. 
  • Over the last five years (including 2020-21), the Terrapins went 23-19 (54.8%) in the month of January. The Terps are 27-5 in February (84.4%). 
  • The Terrapins are currently without four guards due to injury. Lea Bartelme (torn ACL Nov. 13), Kaylene Smikle (out since Dec. 7 with knee injury), Ava McKennie (torn ACL Nov. 27), Bri McDaniel (torn ACL in Jan. 2025) are all out for the season. 

  • The Terrapins are No. 7 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten in rebounding margin (+10.5). They also lead the league and are No. 10 nationally in offensive rebounds (15.9). The Terps are 12th in the country in scoring (83.4 ppg), 9th in scoring margin (+21.1). They lead the Big Ten and are No. 13 in the country in free throws made per game (15.86). 
  • Yarden Garzon is leading the Big Ten and No. 14 in the country in threes made (81). Oluchi Okananwa is No. 4 in the Big Ten in steals with 63, No. 11 in the conference in scoring (17.4) and No. 5 in free throws made (101). Okananwa also leads all Big Ten guards in points in the paint (10.1) and leads all Big Ten players in fastbreak points (5.2).
  • Seniors Yarden Garzon and Kaylene Smikle were named to the 10-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team by both the league's head coaches and media panel. 
  • Maryland women's basketball is its 55th season and owns a record of 1,172-478 (.710). The Terrapins are No. 11 all-time in NCAA Division I history in winning percentage and No. 9 in all-time victories.

  • Over the last five seasons, the Terrapins are 95-12 when leading at the half. They are 37-7 over the last two years when leading at halftime.

  • The Terps are 233-76 (.754) all-time against their Big Ten opponents.
  • Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 191-46 (.806) vs. their conference opponents, including their 22-6 record in the Big Ten Tournament.

  • In the 24 years under Frese, the Terps are 204-51 (.800) against their Big Ten opponents.
  • Frese is 218-56 (.796) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time at Minnesota and at Ball State. 
  • Since joining the league in 2014, Maryland is 87-17 (.837) against Big Ten teams at home.

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 24th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 629-175 (.782), 14 conference titles, 21 NCAA Tournament bids in 23 postseasons, three Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, 12 Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese owns a career record of 686-205 (.770) over her 27 years as a head coach.
  • Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October 2021, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).
