Terps Baseball Walks-Off Wagner, 10-9, in Game One Thriller

The Terps are 3-0 at home to start the season with back-to-back walk-off wins.

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Jordan Crosland was the hero for Maryland baseball, as he hustled to first base to prevent a near inning-ending double-play in the bottom of the ninth. The play helped the Terps steal game one of its three-game series against Wagner, defeating the Seahawks 10-9 on Friday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Terps have won on a walk-off in back-to-back games for the first time since April 8 and 10, 2016 vs. Ohio State.

The game featured several lead changes, but it was the Terps (5-4) that sealed the win late. They retook a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and held it until Wagner (1-6) plated a run in the top of the ninth to send it to the bottom half.

Two-sport star Bud Coombs went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a pair of runs, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He blasted a three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the third, which briefly put the Terps ahead with their first lead of the game. Coombs has back-to-back games with a homer. This was also his first career multi-hit game.

Despite allowing the late run, Maryland's bullpen posted a dominant outing. Ryan Bailey pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters. His best inning came in the sixth, where he posted a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Jayson Torres and Cristofer Cespedes were also pivotal in the win. Torres pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, while Cespedes pitched the final two innings, where he allowed a single run and struck out two Seahawks.

Brayden Martin went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. David Mendez, Paul Jones II and Antonio Morales followed, driving in one run apiece. Freshman Ty Kaunas went 3-for-5 in the box, securing the fourth multi-hit game of his young career. It was also his first career three-hit day.

Wagner fell to 1-6 on the season despite their valiant effort. It was led by Joseph Mennella, who accounted for six of the team's RBIs. He recorded two separate three-run home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
  How it Happened:
  • Lance Williams stranded two runners on base, ending the top of the first inning with his first strikeout at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
  • Wagner's Omar Carreras hit a two-run home run to center field, giving his team a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
  • The Terps tied the game at 2-2  in the bottom of the second, as Antonio Morales recorded an RBI triple and Brayden Martin sent him home with a single.
  • Wagner jumped back ahead, taking a 5-2 lead with a three-run home run by Joseph Mennella in the top of the third.
  • Maryland led 6-5 entering the fourth. Paul Jones II hit an RBI single, and Bud Coombs launched a three-run homer to center field.
  • The Seahawks vaulted back in front with another three-run homer by Mennella.
  • David Mendez chipped into the Wagner lead with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Terps retook the lead, 9-8, in the top of the sixth with Martin knocking in another run with a single and Coombs scoring on an error.
