No. 22 Terps Roll Past Nebraska in 78-60 Conference Win

Four Terps scored in double figures as they capped off a two-game road sweep.

LINCOLN, NE — All the stars were out in No. 22 Maryland's 78-60 win over Nebraska on Saturday afternoon. Four Terps (19-6, 7-6 Big Ten) scored in double figures as they rolled past the Cornhuskers (16-8, 5-8 Big Ten) to sweep their two-game road trip. 

Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu had a huge game for the Terps, leading the team with 16 points and snagging nine boards in her 11th-career game with double-digit scoring while Oluchi Okananwa dazzled again with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. She scored nine points in the opening quarter as Maryland jumped ahead and didn't look back in its 19th win of the season.  Rainey Welson had a breakout game against the Cornhuskers with a career-high 13 points and a career-high four assists for her third-career double-figure performance. Saylor Poffenbarger's eight points and nine rebounds helped Maryland become just the third team this season to deal Nebraska a home loss. Maryland dominated Nebraska 39-26 on the boards in the win.  Maryland used a huge 30-point second quarter to build a 45-28 halftime lead. Yarden Garzon (11 points, six assists) and Poffenbarger each hit a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points in the frame. Garzon extended her Big Ten-leading three-point total to 69 in the win. How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Ozzy-Momodu got the scoring started with a layup.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Okananwa built an 8-3 lead. 
  • Okananwa drilled the Terps' first three-pointer of the afternoon.
  • Ozzy-Momodu scored four points and grabbed four boards in the first quarter.
  • Mir McLean got on the board as Maryland took a 15-11 lead into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter:
  • Saylor Poffenbarger nailed a three to get the Terps' offense going in the second quarter.
  • Her second three of the frame built a 21-13 lead. 
  • Addi Mack got on the board during an 8-0 Maryland run. 
  • Garzon nailed a three-pointer as the Terps took a 32-22 lead into the media timeout. 
  • Garzon hit a second three as Maryland went on a 9-0 run. 
  • The Terps held Nebraska without a field goal for over four minutes as the lead grew to 41-26.
  • Maryland led 45-28 at the half.
3rd Quarter:
  • Garzon broke into double figures with an early three, putting the Terps up to 50 points.
  • Welson drained a three as Maryland grabbed a 59-38 lead at the media timeout.
  • Ozzy-Momodu, Okananwa, and Welson reached double figures in the third quarter. 
  • Maryland took a 70-46 lead into the final frame.
4th Quarter:
  • Breanna Williams got the scoring started for Maryland in the fourth quarter. 
  • Maryland closed out a dominant 78-60 win.
Double-Digit Days:
  • Ozzy-Momodu (16 points) scored in double figures for the 11th time this season.
  • Okananwa (14 points) scored 10+ points for the 21st time this season and the 57th time in her career. 
  • Welson (13 points) tallied her third-career game with 10+ points.
  • Garzon (11 points) reached double figures for the 18th time this season and the 82nd time in her career.
Outstanding Oluchi:
  • Okananwa logged another impressive Big Ten performance on Saturday, tallying 14 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. 
  • In 13 conference games this season, she's averaging 19.3 points per game. 
  • Okananwa ranks in the top 10 in the Big Ten in total points, field goals, free throws, offensive rebounds, and steals.
Navigating Nebraska:
  • Saturday marked the 21st all-time meeting between Nebraska and Maryland, with the Terps winning 16 of the previous contests. 
  • Maryland improved to 8-1 on the road against the Cornhuskers and snapped Nebraska's three-game winning streak over the Terps. 
  • Maryland's biggest win in series history was a 93-49 victory in 2017.
