Terps Tally 12 Hits in Midweek Loss to No. 9 Virginia

Five Terps collected multiple knocks in Tuesday’s neutral-site battle.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Maryland and No. 9 Virginia faced off in a back-and-forth battle on Tuesday night at Virginia Credit Union Stadium, until the Cavaliers put together a nine-run eighth inning to put away a 16-6 win and drop the Terps to 11-13 in 20206.

Ryan Costello had a big day with a pair of doubles and an RBI as one of five Terps with multiple hits against the Cavaliers. Jackson Sirois collected a pair of hits and scored twice against his former team. Maryland chased Virginia starter Jayden Stroman with a four-hit third inning that featured RBI hits from both Ty Kaunas and Costello as the Terps claimed a 3-1 lead. 

Virginia scored five runs across the second, third, and fourth innings in the early goings of the midweek clash. Maryland rallied to claim a 6-5 lead in the sixth with a three-hit inning as the Terps kept the hit parade rolling.  Jordan Crosland recorded his fifth multi-hit performance in his last seven games with a pair of singles on Tuesday. Brayden Martin logged his 10th multi-hit performance of the season as he extended his on-base streak to 54 games.

Virginia scored nine of its runs with two outs while collecting nine two-out hits (19 total) to secure the Cavaliers' 21st win of the season. Maryland returns to College Park to open a three-game series with No. 13 USC on Mar. 27.

  • T1: Martin led the game off with a single for his team-leading 34th hit of the season.

  • B2: A two-out RBI single gave UVA a 1-0 lead.
