No. 3 Terps Earn Gritty 14-13 Win Over No. 21 Penn State

Maryland grabbed its fifth ranked win of the season in its best start since 2026.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Three different Terps tallied three or more goals in No. 3 Maryland's 14-13 win over Penn State at SECU Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Four goals from Lauren LaPointe — and three from both Kori Edmondson and Keeley Block — lifted the Terps to a 12-0 start for the first time since 2019. Maryland scored on its first four shots on goal in Sunday's contest. Jordyn Lipkin netted a pair of goals in the Terps' four-goal first quarter. Lipkin was one of five Terps to score multiple times in the Big Ten bout. LaPointe scored four of Maryland's five second-quarter goals as the Terps took a 9-6 lead into the break. Edmondson scored two of her three goals in the opening half as the Terps and Nittany Lions traded blows. The third quarter was a Block party as she found the back of the net twice to secure her fifth hat trick of the season while Maryland tried to separate itself from the Nittany Lions. The Terps held on in the final quarter to seal their 12th win of the season and move to 14-0 all-time against Penn State when playing at home. 

Kayla Gilmore earned seven of Maryland's 19 draw controls in the win as the Terps grabbed their fifth ranked win of the season and moved to 4-0 in Big Ten play for the eighth time since joining the conference in 2015. Maryland looks to keep its impressive season rolling against Rutgers on Apr. 4. 

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Edmondson's 30th goal of the year opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game. 
  • Back-to-back PSU goals gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the day.
  • Lipkin's 10th of the season tied the game midway through the quarter.
  • Block's 22nd goal of the season put the Terps back in front with 4:31 to play.
  • Lipkin's second goal of the opening quarter gave UMD a 4-2 lead to take into the second.
2nd Quarter:
  • LaPointe's 40th goal of the year opened the scoring in the second quarter. 
  • Penn State scored back-to-back goals to cut the Terps' lead to one.
  • Edmondson's second goal of the game created a 6-4 lead with 9:28 to play. 
  • PSU added its fifth goal with 6:58 to play in the half.
  • LaPointe's second of the day came on the two-man advantage to make it 7-5.
  • The Nittany Lions' sixth goals of the day game with 4:20 to play. 
  • LaPointe secured her hat trick late in the half.
  • LaPointe's fourth goal of the quarter gave Maryland a 9-6 lead to take into the break.
3rd Quarter:
  • Penn State opened the scoring with back-to-back goals.
  • Kristen Shanahan's 26th goal of the season put the Terps in double figures.
  • The Nittany Lions drew back within a goal with 6:53 to play.
  • Block's second of the day gave the Terps an 11-9 lead with 4:33 to play.
  • Block secured her hat trick late in the third quarter.
  • Edmondson sealed her hat trick with 1:01 to go.
  • Maryland took a 13-10 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
4th Quarter:
  • PSU netted the first goal of the quarter in the second minute of the frame.
  • Shanahan's second goal of the day rebuilt a three-goal lead. 
  • The Nittany Lions scored their 12th goal of the day with 8:24 to play.
  • PSU crawled within a goal with 3:56 left.
  • Maryland held on to earn the 14-13 win.

Multi-Point Terps:
  • LaPointe (Four goals) tallied her 21st multi-goal game of her career and her 23rd game with multiple points.
  • Edmondson (three goals) scored multiple goals for the 52nd time in her career and logged her 54th multi-point game of her career.
  • Block (three goals) scored multiple goals for a 35th time in her collegiate career and played in her 45th game with multiple points.
  • Shanahan (two goals, three assists) logged her 31st multi-point game of her career, her 23rd game with multiple goals, and her 11th with multiple assists.
  • Lipkin (two goals) scored multiple goals for the 27th time in her career in her 36th multi-point game.
Super 2026 Season:
  • Maryland moved to 12-0 for the first time since 2019 and is 6-0 at home for the first time since 2021.
  • The Terps are 4-0 to open Big Ten play for the eighth time since joining the conference in 2015.
  • Maryland grabbed its fifth ranked win of the season, outscoring opponents 71-51 in such contests.
  • The Terps are averaging 14.2 goals per game through 12 games this season.
  • Maryland has scored in double figures 11 times this season and held opponents to single-digit scoring eight times. 
Taming the Nittany Lions:
  • Saturday marked the 65th all-time meeting between Maryland and Penn State, with the Terps winning 45 of the previous contests.
