Cornwell Records Three-Hit Game in 9-3 Loss

Mariah Penta drove in a pair of runs in Sunday's series finale.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Rutgers used a five-run fifth inning to claim the series finale over Maryland, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon. Caitlyn Cornwell recorded a three-hit day and Penta grabbed a pair of RBIs, but the Terps fell to 11-11 on the year.  Two quick Rutgers runs in the top of the first prompted Maryland to use three different pitchers in the final game of the weekend series. Matti Benson cut into Rutgers' lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to get Maryland on the board.  Mariah Penta helped Maryland creep closer with a two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Rutger's five-run fifth was too much to overcome as the Scarlet Knights earned their 11th win of the season. Maryland is back in action against Delaware at home on Mar. 10.  How it Happened:
  • T1: Rutgers' Sam Rohwer led the game off with a leadoff homer. 
  • T1: The Scarlet Knights pushed across two runs on three hits to claim a 2-0 lead. 
  • B1: Cornwell legged out a leadoff bunt single.
  • T3: Wiegand stranded two in a scoreless frame. 
  • B3: Cornwell singled for the second time to put a pair of runners on with one out. 
  • T4: Rutgers took a 3-0 lead on a throwing error. 
  • B4: Benson's RBI single got the Terps on the board. 
  • T5: Rutgers added five runs to its lead with a three-hit inning. 
  • B5: Penta's two-out, two-RBI double made it an 8-3 game. 
  • T7: Rutgers pushed an insurance run across on an error.
