Terps Smack Season-High Five Homers in 14-12 Loss to Ohio State

Maryland and the Buckeyes traded blows on a wild Saturday afternoon.

COLUMBUS, OH — The Terps and Buckeyes combined for 11 homers, 33 hits, and 26 runs in Saturday's slugfest, but Ohio State came away with the 14-12 win to capture the weekend series and drop the Terps to 13-17 (2-9 Big Ten) in 2026. Maryland clobbered a season-high five homers — including two from the Big Ten's new leader, Ryan Costello — as the bats rolled in Columbus.  David Mendez recorded a three-hit day as one of six Terps with multiple knocks in the thriller. Eight of Maryland's nine starters reached via hit, but the Buckeyes smacked six homers to snatch the win.

Jordan Crosland opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning for his seventh homer of the season. Jackson Sirois plated a run with a sac-fly in the second inning, but the Buckeyes scored five runs across the first two frames to claim an early lead.  Maryland fought back with a six-run third inning that featured Costello's second grand slam of 2026 and Sirois' third homer in his past three games. The Buckeyes responded with a five-run frame as 18 total runs crossed home across the first three innings.  The Terps' bats exploded again in the sixth inning as Ty Kaunas and Costello went back-to-back to put Maryland back in front. Kaunas' blast was just his second of the season and tied the game before Costello gave Maryland the lead and temporarily separated himself from the rest of the Big Ten's sluggers. Nate Hawton-Henley plated the sixth run of the inning with an RBI triple. The Terps' 12 runs were their most in a conference game this season, but Ohio State dealt the final blows with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to improve to 16-13 (6-5 Big Ten) on the season. Maryland gets a final crack at the Buckeyes on Sunday at 1 PM.
