COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland men's basketball team and Georgetown will meet on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., as announced today. The game will be the second meeting of a four-game series that was previously announced. The tip time and television assignment will be announced at a later date.
The two programs met for the first time in nearly a decade last season in the home opener at XFINITY. The remaining two games in the series will rotate venues again as Maryland will host in 2027-28 and the Hoyas will host in 2028-29.
All-time, Maryland is 38-28 against Georgetown. The Hoyas won last year's meeting in XFINITY Center, 70-60. Prior to last season's game, the most recent meeting between the DMV rivals was Nov. 15, 2016.
From 1935-1980, the teams met at least once annually with the exception of a three-year pause due to World War II. The series dates back to the first game on Feb. 15, 1911 – a 31-25 win for Georgetown.
The teams have twice played in the NCAA Tournament. The first was in 1980 in Philadelphia and the second was in 2001 in Anaheim, California, during the Terps' run to their first Final Four appearance.
Perhaps one of the most iconic meetings came in 1993 – the only time the two teams played between 1980 and 2001 – where Maryland upset No. 15 Georgetown 84-83 in overtime at USAir Arena in Landover. Joe Smith scored 26 points and Duane Simpkins hit the game-winner in overtime. That sparked a run during the season that saw the Terps ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1985-86 and a trip to the Sweet 16. It also marked the first of 11 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament for Maryland.
Along with the Georgetown game, Maryland's 2026-27 non-conference schedule will also feature the previously announced home game against Virginia (Friday, Nov. 13) and a meeting with Tennessee in Las Vegas to open the Players Era Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Terps will also host Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rutgers, UCLA, USC, and Wisconsin at XFINITY Center as part of the Big Ten slate.
Throughout the 2026-27 season, Maryland will have a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the program's 2002 NCAA National Championship, presented by Northrop Realty. Home games throughout the 2026-27 season will feature special promotions, giveaways, player appearances and autograph sessions, and more that will celebrate this truly historic milestone in Maryland Athletics history.
To coincide with the championship celebration, a special slate of limited-edition commemorative gifts will be available for season ticket members who renew or those who purchase for the first time by the June 30 deadline.
