Men’s Basketball To Face South Carolina In Baltimore

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland men's basketball team will officially take on South Carolina on Saturday, December 19 at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore as announced on Tuesday. Tip time, ticket info, and television information will all be shared in the near future.
This will mark the first time the two teams have met since March 29, 2005 in the NIT Semifinals at Madison Square Garden. It will be the 59th all-time meeting between the two teams with Maryland holding a 31-27 edge in the all-time series.
The two schools were conference rivals in both the Southern Conference and the ACC from the first meeting in 1925 until 1971.
One of the most famous meetings in the series came on Jan. 9, 1971 when the Terps defeated the second-ranked Gamecocks, 31-30, in overtime at Cole Field House. Jim O'Brien's jumper at the buzzer in OT capped a spurt of six points in the final 14 seconds for Maryland. The game was a rematch of the earlier meeting that season which South Carolina won by 26 points and featured several fights and reprimands. After that game, head coach Lefty Driesell implemented his "slow-down" strategy which led to Maryland holding a 4-3 lead at halftime in the rematch.
The win marked Driesell's first against a ranked opponent during his career leading the Terps.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams in Baltimore. In College Park, the Terps hold a 19-7 all-time record against the Gamecocks.
This is the fourth non-conference game of the year to be announced for Maryland. The Terps have also announced its road game at Georgetown (Nov. 7), its home game against Virginia (Nov. 13), and its Players Era Tournament opener against Tennessee (Nov. 24). The Terps will also host Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rutgers, UCLA, USC, and Wisconsin at XFINITY Center as part of the Big Ten slate.
Throughout the 2026-27 season, Maryland will have a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the program's 2002 NCAA National Championship, presented by Northrop Realty. Home games throughout the 2026-27 season will feature special promotions, giveaways, player appearances and autograph sessions, and more that will celebrate this truly historic milestone in Maryland Athletics history.
