Terps Stuck In Slump, Drop Both Matches
The men's tennis team stumbled over the weekend, losing to Florida State and Wake Forest by identical scores of 7-0. The Terps have lost their last seven matches and have been plagued by injury and illness this season. Sophomore Jonathan Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was back in action for the first time in over a month, after suffering from severe tendinitis in his shoulder.
On Saturday, the Terps faced Florida State with a complete roster for the first time since Murchison's injury in February. However, he suffered from another injury in his singles match, which ended early, and lost the match, 6-4, 2-1. The Terps lost the doubles point, losing all three doubles matches. Junior Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Murchison played a tough match, losing to Chad Mooney and Joe Bassett by a score of 8-4.
In singles action, the Seminoles swept the matches. Freshman Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) had a strong performance against Noah Schell, but lost the match, 7-6, 6-4. Junior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) also played well.
On Sunday, the Terps' woes continued as they dropped their seventh consecutive match of the season to Wake Forest. The Terps were without Murchison and had to forfeit a singles and doubles match. The freshmen duo of Peter Harjes (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Chris Chiu played a hard-fought match to Trent Brendan and Justin Kaufmann but lost by a score of 8-4. Juniors Dan Kenshalo and Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) played a strong match at the No. 2 position, losing to Mike Murray and Mark Grae, 8-4. The Demon Deacons swept the singles matches.
Terps Plagued By Wildcat Woes, Stumble To Villanova
The men's tennis team struggled with Villanova two weeks ago, losing the match 6-1. The Terps won the first doubles match, as freshman Peter Harjes (Woodbury, N.Y.) and junior Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) defeated Robert Waibel and Josh Schofield, 8-4. However the Terps lost the second match and were forced to forfeit the third due to injury. In singles action, freshman Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) had the only win for the Terps, defeating Mike Mock by a score of 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. The loss dropped the Terps to 2-3 when facing non-conference opponents.
