COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland men's tennis team, which closed out the regular season with back-to-back ACC matches last weekend, will travel to Atlanta, Ga., this week to compete in the ACC Championships. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, when the No.9-seeded Terps face NC State, the No.8 seed, in the play-in match. The team that wins the match will advance to the first round. Last year the Terps faced the Wolfpack in the play-in round, NC State won the match, 6-1.
Terps Win President's Cup Honors For Fourth Time
The men's tennis team does it again. The President's Cup award, in its fourth year of existence, was presented to the team on Sunday, April 11. President C.D. Mote presented the Terps with the award at the President's Cup Luncheon. The Terps have won the prestigious President's Cup award each year for the past four years.
The men's and women's teams with the highest cummulative GPA are awarded the President's Cup each spring. The men's tennis team won the award with a GPA of 3.1. The women's gymnastics team also received the award. Additionally, junior Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) received the Academic Achievement award for the team.
Terps Drop Matches To No. 6 Duke, No. 16 UNC
The Terps closed out regular season play last weekend, when they hosted No. 6 Duke on Saturday, April 15, and No. 16 North Carolina the following day. The Terps lost both matches by identical scores of 6-0. Both matches were forced indoors due to rain, and doubles matches were not played in either match.
On Saturday, the Blue Devils swept singles play, winning all six matches. Junior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) opened the match in the No. 1 spot, but lost to Andres Pedroso, 6-1, 6-0. Fellow junior Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) faced Yorke Allen in the No. 3 position. Allen won the match by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
On Sunday, North Carolina won all five singles matches played. Sophomore Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) did not play for the Terps due to a recurring shoulder injury. Freshman Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) won the first set of his three-set series with Assaf Drori. Drori came back to win the next two sets and the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Peter Harjes also played well, but lost to Marcio Petrone, 6-2, 6-0.
In Final Non-Conference Match, Terps Record Win Over Coppin State
Last Tuesday the Terps swept singles and doubles play in their match with Coppin State as they won the match, 6-1. Sophomore Jon Murchison did not play due to a shoulder injury. Juniors Larry Chou, Dan Kenshalo and Luan Nguyen all recorded singles victories. Additionally, freshmen Chris Chiu and Peter Harjes won their matches. Chiu's victory marked his fifth singles win of the season, which leads the team. The win improved the Terps' non-conference record to 3-2.
