Terps Closed Out Season At ACC Championships

April 24, 2000

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The University of Maryland men's tennis team's 2000 campaign came to an end last Thursday when it faced NC State in the play-in round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. The Terps lost the match by a score of 4-0. Maryland was forced to play with a five-man roster, after freshman Peter Harjes (Woodbury, N.Y.) suffered from a back injury he sustained prior to the tournament. The Terps opened the match by playing two doubles matches. The duo of freshman Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) faced Eric Jackson and Keith Salmon at the No. 1 spot. However the Wolfpack pair won the match, 8-2. At the No. 2 position, juniors Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) and Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) lost to Brad Kilgore and Brian Cowman, 8-2. In singles play, Maryland forfeited the No. 6 spot. Junior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) lost to Jackson, 6-0, 6-3. Luan Nguyen ended play at the No. 4 position when he lost to Ryan Boward by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Terps Post 3-3 Non-Conference Record With Wins Over Regional Teams

The Terps boasted a 3-3 record over non-conference foes this season. Maryland began the season with a two-match win streak following the home-opening weekend of play. The Terps defeated George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 19, 4-3. Maryland won all three doubles matches, and picked up the doubles point for the first time in almost a year. The following day, Maryland defeated Georgetown, 6-1, and won the first four singles matches. Junior Larry Chou and freshman Peter Harjes picked up their first wins of the season.

Maryland's most recent non-conference win came on April 11, as the team recorded a decisive victory over Coppin State, 6-1. The Terps won all five singles matches played, and earned the doubles point as well.

Freshman Chris Chiu's Five Singles Victories Lead Terps

Freshman Chris Chiu stepped up this season, and proved to be one of the Terps' most consistent players. He also was a versatile player for the Terps, as he played at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 spots. Chiu lead the team in singles wins, with five, all of which came over non-conference opponents. He was the only Terp to record victories over five of the six non-conference opponents.

Luan Nguyen's Victory Over Virginia's Duquette Marks First For Terps

Junior Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) recorded the Terps' first singles win over an ACC opponent in almost a year when he defeated Virginia's Michael Duquette, 6-4, 6-4, on April 4. The victory marked Nguyen's first ACC win. The last time a Terp defeated an ACC foe was in last year's ACC Championships when then-senior James Legat defeated NC State's Deval Desai.
