Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I am very proud of our veterans. I thought they did a tremendous job showing a level of toughness. I could go down the list, starting with Kim and the defensive presence she was able to give us tonight. I just thought she showed great toughness in playing defensively. Lynetta being able to fight through a severe ankle sprain and give us the post presence that we desperately needed. Lori hit big shot after big shot at points in the game when we needed it and did a tremendous job. You have to have that, and I was very proud to see our veterans play a very solid and very poised game."
On preparing for the game with little time:
"It's tough. They were on a motion offense, and you need about a week to prepare for a motion offense. And then when you have the level of play you have out of someone like [Gabriela Marginean], with All-American-type numbers, this team held her to four points in the second half. I thought we did a great job collectively being able to help each other out. It was very impressive. I'm excited; when you have quick turnarounds to have that kind of play bodes well for our future."
On the matchup between Kim Rodgers and Gabriela Marginean:
"We just felt it was a really good matchup going in to this game. Kim does a tremendous job defensively being physical. She is an intelligent player, and we felt that would be the best matchup. We like it when she shows what a tremendous job she does defensively."
On player fatigue impacting the outcome:
"I thought at different points it did. We knew their five starters were going to play a lot of minutes, so we wanted to push tempo. I think for three games in six days, it showed a lot of character on our end to be able to grind this game out with different spurts in the game."
Sophomore guard Kim Rodgers
On defending Gabriela Marginean:
"I just made sure I went over the scout, watched the film, and all of their clips so that I would have a feel for her actions and tendencies. One of the goals was to limit her touches on the ball and to make sure she had as few as possible so she wouldn't even have an opportunity to make a play."
Sophomore center Lynetta Kizer
On playing 18 minutes with a sprained ankle:
"At bits and pieces it was sore every now and then, but the coaches were smart with me, and they helped me to stay positive and not to worry about the injury too much and to just go out and play."
On keeping up with the tempo of the game:
"In points I did. Besides that, on defense, my job wasn't too hard tonight, just good help on defense and being a distraction."
Senior guard Lori Bjork
On hitting 3 for 4 from 3 point range:
"First and foremost, you can have a lot of confidence shooting when you know that, if you miss, you have the offensive rebounders that we have. It can be a good play to throw up a brick sometimes because you know we are going to still get a layup out of it. I thought people did a great job of looking for me and finding me. To be able to shoot, you have to get the ball, and everyone got me at good spots today."
