Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I thought this was a very solid first game. I thought it showed in terms of, a first game, a lot of things to be able to work on. I think I was really encouraged, especially second half, when the things we addressed in the locker room I thought we improved on. I think you can see this is going to be a fun team to coach. I feel like we have a lot of depth and I thought we played really well together. Just happy with our solid performance tonight but definitely areas we feel like we can improve and get better with.
On the team going 19-21 in free throw shooting:
"It was big. That is what's great about challenging this team in an area we really felt like we needed to improve on: the free shooting and the turnovers and to turn it around so quickly. The great thing is that it shows that this team can do it when you put a challenge ahead of them that they absolutely can turn it around.
On the team's depth:
"I think we feel like we can have that kind of depth and these players are showing that consistently, every single day, preseason to practice, this is the deepest team that I've ever had. We feel like we should be able to continue to send waves at every team that we play against."
On the halftime adjustments:
"We had some lulls, in terms of the first half that our intensity levels went down once we got that big lead we didn't sustain it. And I didn't think our rebounding was very good, we were only outrebounding them by three. So it is tremendous in the fact that, you can challenge this team at halftime and they can absolutely respond."
Freshman guard Laurin Mincy
On her first game:
"I'm pretty excited right now. I think as a team we did a phenomenal job with meeting the goals that Coach Frese set for us today. I think that my teammates did a great job getting it to me in the right position."
Sophomore forward Tianna Hawkins
On getting off to a quick start in the game:
"I think it says that as a team we're working hard to get to this point. So I guess coming into the game we felt kind of confident that since we worked hard prior to the game that we were confident and ready to play."
Monmouth Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley
Opening Statement:
"Hats off to Maryland. Obviously I thought they were a very talented team last year, and the freshmen are a year older, and as we know one of the best recruiting classes in the country. I think once we settled down, we did some good things but again all the credit goes to Maryland. I thought that their game plan was outstanding. I think they jumped on us early, they put us on our heels, and they're an outstanding rebounding team. But they have something at every position. They can knock down a three. We went zone to just kind of slow them down a little bit, but they do a great job of stretching you out by knocking down the open three and then they go right inside so they're a tough matchup. They're going to be definitely a team to be reckoned with come NCAA time.
