COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team beat Monmouth 73-40 in its season opener Saturday evening at the Comcast Center. Freshman Laurin Mincy led all scorers with 15 points.

Junior Lynetta Kizer and sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang each scored 11 points, while freshman Alyssa Thomas added 10. Sophomore Tianna Hawkins had nine points and junior Kim Rodgers notched eight.

"I thought this was a very solid first game. I thought it showed a lot of things to be able to work on," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I think I was really encouraged, especially in the second half, when the things we addressed in the locker room I thought we improved on. I think you can see this is going to be a fun team to coach."

Thomas scored the first two points of the game five seconds in to push the Terps out to a 24-2 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The Terrapins' 18 points in the paint in the first half gave them a 43-18 lead at the break.

The Terps were 19-21 from the free throw line overall, including Mincy's 5-5. Rodgers and Mincy each hit two three's in the contest.

Defensively, the Terrapins grabbed the rebounding advantage 50-31. Hawkins led with seven boards, while Kizer and Thomas each grabbed six. Maryland outscored the Hawks in the paint 40-1 and 31-10 in points off the bench. 13 Terrapins saw action and 10 saw 14 minutes or more.

"I think we feel like we can have that kind of depth and these players are showing that consistently, every single day, preseason to practice, this is the deepest team that I've ever had," Frese said. "We feel like we should be able to continue to send waves at every team that we play against."

The Hawks' Alysha Womack, a Preseason NEC-Team member, led Monmouth with 13 points. The Terps own the all-time series over the Hawks 4-0.

Saturday night was Frese's 198th win at Maryland. She is entering her ninth season in College Park and has an overall record at Maryland of 198-73.

Up next, the Terps will play at No. 13 Georgetown Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the McDonough Center.
