Maryland vs. No. 9/9 Florida State
Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010
College Park, Md. (Comcast center)
FINAL SCORE: Maryland 61, No. 9/9 Florida State 94
Maryland head coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"Like I told them in the locker room, obviously a tough game. You have to tip your hat to Florida State, they came in and showed why their ranking is very deserving. That's just a very talented team that sent waves of players at us today. From our end, this was a game that was not very typical of how we play. I thought we played one of our worst games up to this point in the season, obviously the pressure we faced against Florida State was tremendous. I'm not sure if it was fatigue, but an opportunity for us now to move through this game rather quickly to prepare ourselves and get ready for the ACC tournament."
On Florida State's back-t- back threes before halftime:
"They just have so many weapons, we were trying to obviously make some of their players that are really good slashers have to shoot it, that was the game plan as a coaching staff and our players were executing it but their players were making shots and you have to pick your poison against all of the talent Florida State has. So just credit them, players that are not usually hitting shots did a tremendous job making big plays and that really hurt us in that stretch."
On whether or not she thought that Maryland was worthy of playing in the NCAA tournament:
"We're going to have to prove ourselves in the [ACC] tournament and I think that's fairly evident and we control our own destiny, we have all season long. There were numerous games that we lost at the free throw line or lost by a possession and those are games that are all within our control. Now it's a new season for us going down to the ACC tournament. Everybody goes in there 0-0 and you go in there fighting for your life."
Sophomore Center Lynetta Kizer
On why Maryland couldn't sustain their 6-0 run to open the game:
"We just came out playing aggressive and I think Florida State did a good job adjusting on our shooters and we couldn't get as many open looks. We stopped penetrating and that was what we wanted to do and we were slowing down and I guess that's what hurt us."
On whether or not Florida State's three point shooting was as hot as she's seen this year:
"Yeah, coach was saying that some of their players that we wanted to shoot the ball were making shots more than the people that we didn't want shooting the ball. It was a lose-lose situation pretty much."
Florida State head coach Sue Semrau
Opening Statement:
"Going into the ACC tournament, we had a lot of things we wanted to try to do tonight. I really have to compliment Maryland. I think they've really come a long way with freshmen and sophomores and they're going to be a really great team. We were able to use some experience this afternoon to give out a lot of really good looks. We had a really balanced game. Inside was great. Jacinta and Cierra Bravard are really tough to handle and then our three-point shooting was fantastic. The best its been since 2004 I think."
On whether or not she thought they would cool down on shooting:
"Not today, I don't know why I didn't think that because normally you would think that from being on the road and all, but we were getting such great looks. I thought our screens were good and because Jacinta and Cierra were hard to handle and our perimeter players were working really hard to be in that position, I thought we capitalized on it."
On whether or not Maryland is NCAA tournament worthy team:
"Absolutely. I think that you look at what they've been able to do against their competition and, again, going into the ACC tournament I think they'll be really tough to handle. I sure can't pronounce number 24's name, but she's quite a player. She's really growing into the system."
