COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps continue to advance in the post season while playing in the friendly confines of Comcast Center this Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. ET. Maryland will face Providence College who just defeated Old Dominion, 76-61.
The WNIT has also confirmed the date and time of Round Four should the Terrapins advance. If Maryland defeats the Friars on Thursday, they will host the winner of Miami and N.C. A&T on Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m. ET. Tickets for both games are on sale now. Fans should contact the Maryland ticket office by phone at 800-IMA-TERP or online at www.umterps.com. The Terrapins have only faced Providence twice, both times on the road. Maryland claimed the first meeting in 1978, 67-48, and dropped a 77-75 decision in 1990. The loss to the Friars came during the second round of the NCAA tournament. Providence was the No. 3 seed at the time while Maryland was No. 6.
Thus far in the WNIT the Terps have dominated all facets of the game. Five players have averaged double-figure points in the last two games, led by senior Lori Bjork and sophomore Kim Rodgers with 16.0 each. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer has 12.5 while freshmen Tianna Hawkins and Jackie Nared average 10.5 and 10.0, respectively. Hawkins is averaging a double-double, pulling down about 10 boards per game.
Maryland has outscored both opponents by 35 points by thriving from outside the arc. Rodgers has registered at least five treys in each game, matching her career-best mark. Not only have the Terrapins been successful on offense, they are excelling on defense as well, outrebounding their opponents on average by 21 boards. They have held both opponents to 30 percent or less shooting from the field and have forced a combined 23 turnovers in the first two rounds of tournament play. Maryland has capitalized on opponent miscues with 43 points.
Providence earned a bye into the second round of the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 8 seed and fell to No. 9 Syracuse, 76-71. They have been led by a group of four senior starters, highlighted by senior guard Chelsea Marandola how leads the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, three-pointers made and free throw percentage.
Against Old Dominon Marandola continued to lead her team with 19 points. Mi-Khida Hankins registered a double-double for the Friars with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Providence advanced to the second round by defeating Boston University behind a game-high 23 points from Marandola.
PC finished the season with its best record since 1991-92 (21-9) when the Friars last reached a post-season tournament. This invitation marks PC's seventh appearance in post-season action and only the second appearance in the WNIT.
