Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I really liked where we were defensively tonight. We just did a tremendous job in our man [defense]. We were really aggressive and then I thought our defense led to our offense. I thought our transition game, in terms of how we're really getting up, getting out, running the floor and our unselfishness you can see how we're moving the ball. We're stepping up and shooting the ball with confidence. You can start to see that some really good things are coming together for this team."
On the 17-0 run to end the first half:
"I really felt like that stretch was our depth, really wearing them out. There was one stretch where we went about seven minutes before a timeout and I thought just the kind of shape we're in and the depth that we play with and how hard we can play on the floor were absolutely the difference."
On improving from the beginning of the season:
"We're a million times better than the beginning of the season because we've now played so many games together and practices, and you can see the glue, the chemistry on the floor, the unselfishness that we're playing with. I really believe this team doesn't even understand quite how good they can be. We're just tapping it right now. As you can see our depth, when you talk about Kim [Rodgers] and Tianna [Hawkins] and Lauren Mincy and Alicia DeVaughn, as they're putting games together, they make us a really dangerous team because I wouldn't know how you would scout us when they're playing consistent. That's what we've got to be able to have to make a deep run."
On not having any seniors:
"It kind of reminds me of another team we had back in the day. I don't think about that...As a coach, you want to see how good you can be and it is rewarding to see how we're playing right now because this team has the pieces and the talent and as we continue to stay hungry and humble in the pursuit, we're going to continue to do great things."
Junior Guard Kim Rodgers
On her 11-0 run :
"We really just focused on getting baskets in transition so all I did was just get out and try and run. My teammates found me off a couple of rebounds. Tianna [Hawkins] got a strong rebound and took care of it and just looked [for me]. It was my teammates."
Freshman Guard Alyssa Thomas
On being double and triple-teamed:
"You could definitely see they knew their scout and they were trying to take away my strong suits but my teammates found me for open looks and I hit shots."
Sophomore Forward Tianna Hawkins
On playing in the interior:
"I saw the open looks from my teammates around me so I took them. I saw the opportunity to crash the glass to help my team so I took it."
Wake Forest Head Coach Mike Petersen
On Maryland's biggest strength:
"It's the rebounding. We got a display of that during the game. The situation late where they got five straight rebounds distorts the stats a little bit, but they got the ball back whenever they needed it back during the course of the game. It put foul pressure on us. They shoot a lot of free throws for a reason. They a shoot a lot because they chase down loose balls and rebounds and then they get the ball point blank and they're strong and they finish. We fouled them and they made free throws. We did not do close to a good enough job when it was still competitive halfway through the first half, before they went on a 15-0 run to finish the half. We had the ball inside and didn't finish at all...They're a good team and when you crater a little bit against a good team, they'll run out on you and that's what they did."
On Maryland freshman Alyssa Thomas:
"She's really long, really athletic and just makes plays in transition. She makes plays that don't need a play...She goes and gets loose balls. She runs and finishes the break and with the lineup they're playing right now, you don't have to set a screen to get her a mismatch. So who are you going to guard her with? She's very good at taking advantage of that mismatch. She's a very talented player that's playing very hard and playing very well."
