NCAA Drug Testing

The NCAA bans drugs by class (e.g., stimulants), along with any substance chemically related to those classes. NCAA banned drug classes include: anabolic agents, alcohol and beta blockers (for rifle only), anti-estrogens and Beta-2 Agonists, masking agents (e.g. diuretics), peptide hormones and analogues, stimulants, and illicit drugs. The NCAA Banned Drug List provides further information.

Testing positive for “illicit drugs” has the following penalties:
  • 1st positive test: Withholding from competition for 50% of the season in all sports in which the student-athlete participates
  • 2nd positive test: Loss of a year of eligibility and withholding from participation for 365 days from the test.
Testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs has the following penalties:
  • 1st positive test: 365-day suspension and a loss of one year of eligibility.
  • 2nd positive test: Permanently ineligible
