The University of Maryland Athletics Department officially announced the hiring of Jason Yellin as its Associate Athletics Director / Strategic Communications Officer in November 2019.
Yellin, who previously worked at Maryland from 1998-2004, returns with a wealth of experience in sports media, strategic communications, branding and revenue generation at multiple Division I institutions and conference offices.
In his role at Maryland, Yellin oversees the Strategic Communications and Content Development department. He is responsible for the development and execution of communication strategies that promote all 20 varsity sports programs. The position focuses on strategies to enhance and protect the brand reputation and overall mission of Maryland Athletics on a local, regional and national level. He manages a team of 12 staff members and dozens of interns and gameday staffers.Â
He is a member of the One Maryland Council leadership group and serves a Vice Chair. He has played a vital role in Maryland's content development and Name, Image and Likeness strategies, aiding to partner deals with Opendorse, SIDEARM Sports, PhotoShelter and others.Â
He also serves as a secondary sport supervisor for the Big Ten Champion Terrapin baseball program.
Yellin returned to Maryland from the Big Ten Conference office in Chicago, where he spent the last four years as the Assistant Commissioner for Communications. In that capacity, he served as a member of the senior staff directly overseeing the communications unit focused primarily on media relations, operations, social media efforts and the coordination of publicity for 14 member institutions and 28 official conference sports.
Prior to the Big Ten, Yellin was an Assistant Athletic Director and Media Relations Director with the University of Tennessee Volunteers. A member of the Senior Leadership Team, Yellin spent five years operating the media relations office in one of the premier athletic conferences in the nation, the Southeastern Conference. He also served as the primary public relations contact for its nationally-ranked football team, cultivating relationships with national publications, Internet and TV outlets.
Yellin also spent time at the University of Massachusetts as an Associate Athletics Director (2004-11), following his first tenure at Maryland (1998-04). While at Maryland, the Terps won the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships and appeared in three major football bowl games.
Prior to his time at Maryland, Yellin was a part of the launch of ESPN.com from 1996-98. Â Â Â
Yellin graduated from Stony Brook University and worked in the Seawolves' athletics department for eight years throughout high school and college.Â
Yellin and his wife Jen reside in Edgewater and have two children, Hailey (22), a 2023 graduate of Maryland, who worked as a Video Producer for the Carolina Hurricanes, and Quinn (18), a freshman pitcher on the Maryland baseball team.Â
