Finished 6th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional XC Meet in 2009 before placing 37th at the Foot Locker Nationals... Washington Post Athlete of the Year in 2009 for cross country... Two-time All-Met pick by The Post... Four-time cross country first teamer by the P.G. County Gazette... Won the individual title as a senior at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship (16:02 over 5K), snapping an eight-year-old meet record... Earned a double in the 1,600 and 3,200 outdoors at the Crimson Tide Classic... Had PR of 4:02.28 to win 1,500 at the Freddie Hendricks Track Festival... ABC-7 Athlete of the Week... Also competed for the Glenarden Track Club in Landover... Won science fair as a sophomore at DeMatha... Member of chorus... Editor-In-Chief of DeMatha Stagline newspaper as a senior after also serving as a writer and sports editor... Pre-Maryland PRs of 4:24.98 in mile, 4:02.28 in 1,500, 9:12 in 3,200, 15:33 at 5K.
PERSONAL - Parents are Michael and Louisa Puffett... Has a younger sister, Nicole... Majoring in journalism with an eye toward sports broadcasting and an NFL or MLB play-by-play job... Can spend five or 10 minutes tying his shoes before a big race... Sports heroes are Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter and Billy Mills... Non-sports hero is Tony Dungy, for non-sports reasons... Chose Maryland over High Point and NC State... Playing sports growing up he pretended to play basketball for Maryland coach Gary Williams.
