Maryland swimming and diving head coach Sean Schimmel has announced the addition of Erica Janssen as an assistant coach, effective immediately.
Janssen is joining the Terps this season after serving as head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) for two years. During that time, she helped the Panthers to numerous improvements, highlighted by the men's squad winning its first Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championship team title since 2000 in 2010. During her time at the helm of the program, a plethora of records were smashed and she also helped various swimmers earn top conference accolades, including Horizon League's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year Danielle Wenger.
Janssen is also known as a savvy recruiter, enticing 19 recruits to UWM who look to be major contributors for the Panthers this season. Prior to being named the head coach at UWM, Janssen spent two seasons as an assistant with the Panthers and one season at Ball State, working as a graduate assistant while finishing her master's degree in sports administration.
As a student-athlete, Janssen shined in the pool at UW-Stevens Point as a five-time All-America selection, four-year NCAA qualifier and an academic all-conference honoree for the Pointers. A team captain as a junior and senior, she helped guide the program to the WIAC title in 2001.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Maryland staff," Janssen said. "I'm excited about the opportunity that Sean has given me to help continue the progress of the swimming and diving teams."
