Head coach Brenda Frese welcomed Maryland women’s basketball alumna Brionna Jones to her staff as the Director of Player Personnel for the 2023-24 season Wednesday.
Jones, a 2017 graduate of Maryland, currently plays in the WNBA for the Connecticut Sun. She suffered a ruptured achilles tendon this past June. Prior to the injury, she averaged a career-best 15.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game. A two-time WNBA All Star, Jones was named the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year in 2022 and the WNBA Most Improved Player in 2021.
"We are thrilled to welcome Pro Terp Brionna Jones back home to her Maryland family as our Director of Player Personnel,” Frese said. “What an incredible opportunity for us to be able to utilize an All Star and pro in our program. Our student-athletes will be able to gain so many valuable insights from her. It's a GREAT day to be a Terp!"
Jones played for the Terrapins from 2013-2017, helping the Terps to back-to-back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015. She was also a key factor in helping Maryland win three straight Big Ten regular season and tournament titles in its first three years in the league.
Jones’ career field goal percentage of 65.0 percent set a Big Ten record. She is currently tied with Vicky Bullett for No. 7 in the Maryland record books in scoring with 1,928 career points. She is No. 3 in program history in rebounds with 1,209.
“I am very excited to be able to come back to the University of Maryland and help out the team this upcoming season,” Jones said. “I am looking forward to getting a chance to work with and get to know the amazing young women I have gotten to watch from afar over the last few years. I am thankful to be able to get my first insight into the coaching side of basketball at my alma mater working with Coach Frese, and I cannot wait to get started!”
