Maryland's home for Terrapin Athletics was completed in the fall of 2002 and has already provided nearly 20Â seasons of toppled attendance records and memories on the hardwood. XFINITY Center provides a seating capacity of 17,950 fans for basketball, and serves as the home of Maryland gymnastics, as well as a campus site for university special events and select community events.
The Terrapins' first public basketball event was its 2002 Midnight Madness celebration. In its first season, 281,057 fans were on hand to witness Terrapin basketball games for a per-game average of 17,566 as the Terrapins finished fifth in the nation. The Terps went on to finish fifth in the nation once again in 2003-04, with a school-record 287,200 spectators packing the arena for 16 full sellouts and a capacity per-game average of 17,950. Maryland drew 299,391 fans to XFINITY Center during the 2004-05 season, again setting a school record.
Maryland's XFINITY Center ranked in the top-25 nationally in attendance over the course of its first five seasons in the Big Ten Conference (2014-2019), including 5th overall (2015-16) and seventh overall (2016-17). It led the Big Ten Conference in attendance in 2015-16 and ranked second in 2016-17.
The banners hanging from the rafters of the XFINITY Center were refurbished in the summer of 2019. They commemorate all of the many achievements of the men's and women's basketball teams, including the men's 2002 National Championship and the women's 2006 National Championship. The jersey numbers of some of the most respected players in the program's histories are also featured in the rafters.
Twenty suites provide enhanced viewing and entertainment capabilities for Maryland fans.
Maryland's student section accommodates 4,000 of the Terps' perennial ardent supporters. Students fill the first 10 rows that ring the arena floor and a majority of seats on the arena's west wall - which at an intimidating 35-degree incline provides the Terrapins' with a unique home court advantage.
XFINITY Center houses the university's athletics administration offices, the Stephen M. Schanwald Pavilion, that serves as home to the Terps' volleyball and wrestling teams, and the Maryland Club.
XFINITY Center is an excellent place for alumni and fans to enjoy their favorite sports and share in their common Terrapin spirit. Visitors can learn about the men and women who have forged the Maryland Athletics program among the nation's elite as they scroll through the interactive Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame boards.
Maryland has once again reclaimed the status of having the best student activities center and arena in the country.
