COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Under the leadership of ACC Coach of the Year Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, the Maryland women's soccer team earned its school-record fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth on Sunday night. The Terps will host Northeast Conference champion Long Island University on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
The Terps, ranked No. 25 in the most recent NSCAA poll of Nov. 8, advanced to the ACC semifinals, and enter the NCAA Tournament with a 10-9-1 record, having won seven of their last nine games. LIU advanced to the tournament after winning the play-in game against Southwest Texas State, 1-0, on Saturday.
"It doesn't matter who you play, it will be a tough game," said Higgins-Cirovski. "The NCAA Tournament is a different world, every game is a fight for your life because it could be your last game. We can't take any team lightly."
If the Terps advance to the second round, Maryland will play at No. 6 seed Penn State (18-3-1) on Sunday, Nov. 14, at noon in University Park, Pa.

Higgins-Cirovski, Janss, Mynarski Win ACC Honors
Maryland's first-year head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski was named ACC Coach of the Year in her inaugural season at the helm in the conference at the ACC Awards Banquet last Wednesday night. Higgins-Cirovski has taken the Terrapins to new heights in 1999 upsetting three conference opponents ranked in the top 10. She has led the Terps to their best ever finish in the ACC at 4-2-1 and a second place finish. Maryland had never finished higher than 3rd in 13 years of ACC play since 1987. She was also named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996 while at George Washington
Senior midfielder Emily Janss (Brandon, Fla.) earned All-ACC honors for the third time in as many years at Maryland, as she earned All-ACC first team honors this season after being honored on the second team as both a sophomore and junior. A three-time member of the Soccer America Team of the Week, Janss has six goals this season. She scored the game-winning goal in three of the Terps wins this season, including a pair of upsets over ACC ranked opponents, Clemson and Wake Forest. She is listed 10th among Maryland's all-time leaders in goals and points. She was named SoccerTimes.com National Player of the Week on Oct. 18 and ACC Player of the Week that same week.
Senior midfielder Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) earned conference honors for the first time in her career as she was named to the second team. Maryland's fifth all-time leading goal scorer and tied for sixth all-time in points, Mynarski has led the Terps in scoring throughout the season. She tallied nine goals and 20 points in the regular-season. She scored the game-winning goal in three consecutive wins in the Terps' recent five-game winning streak and tallied the game-winner to lift the Terps to the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. She was named co-ACC Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 31.
Terps Play 13 vs. Tourney Teams
Proving that the Terps play one of the nation's toughest schedules, 11 Maryland opponents this season qualified for the 1999 NCAA Tournament field. The Terps have played 13 games against teams in the field and recorded five wins in those games with two wins over Duke, and victories over No. 7 seed Clemson and Wake Forest.
The Terps also faced the other two ACC teams in the field, No. 2 seed North Carolina and Virginia, which received a first round bye. Outside of the conference, Maryland played six teams which made the tournament including USC, UCLA, Baylor, Pennsylvania, James Madison and William & Mary.
Only North Carolina played more games against NCAA qualifying teams this season.

Terps Top Duke In ACC Quarters
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Senior midfielder Jackie Mynarski scored the game-winning goal with 23:48 left in regulation to lift the surging Maryland women's soccer team into the ACC Semifinals with a 2-1 win over No. 7 seed
Duke on Thursday afternoon at Fetzer Field.
Mynarski nailed home the game-winner on assists from senior Lindsay Basalyga and freshman Dana Jarzyniecki.
"I just had to put it in," said the All-ACC Second Team selection. "I wanted to make a difference. This win was such a team effort."
The Terps jumped out to a 1-0 lead as sophomore forward Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) scored against Duke for the third this season at the 23:27 mark. Gustafson grabbed a loose ball in the box which deflected off a Duke defender and smashed it home. Junior Terri Greer was credited with the assist as she passed the ball into the box. Gustafson's goal was the Terps' lone shot of the first half, as the Blue Devils outshot the Terps 7-1 in the half.
Duke tied the game seven minutes into the second half as Sherrill Kester scored from ten yards out. But Mynarski beat Duke goalie Isis Dallis for the fourth time in her career to give Maryland dramatic win.

Terps Play Ranked Teams
Maryland faces one of the nation's toughest schedules this season, taking on 10 teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA women's soccer poll of Nov. 8. The ACC features five teams ranked in the top 25, led by No. 3 North Carolina. Also ranked from the conference are No. 8t Clemson, 15 Wake Forest, No. 16 Virginia and No. 22 Duke. Maryland's 1999 schedule features four non-conference foes that are ranked. William & Mary is No. 10, UCLA is No. 14 and USC is No. 17. Baylor and James Madison are listed among others receiving votes.
No. 9 Is Nice For Terps
Maryland recorded its two biggest wins against teams that were ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA poll when the Terps played them.
The Terps upset then-No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19 in overtime, 4-3, as Sara Gustafson scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime. Maryland also stopped then-No.9 Clemson in overtime on Emily Janss' pair of goals including the winner with 1:14 left in the first overtime on Oct. 17.
Of Maryland's eight losses, six have come against teams currently ranked in the top 25 (USC, UCLA, Baylor, Virginia, William & Mary and North Carolina).
Freshmen Draw Starting Nods
Shannon Higgins-Cirovski has depended heavily on freshmen and sophomore transfer Sara Gustafson this season. Six different first-year players have started for the Terps in 1999. In fact, over the Terps' 20 games, 48 percent of the starting positions have been held by freshmen or Gustafson.
Leading the way for the freshmen starters have been defensive stalwarts Lindsay Givens, Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) and Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.). The trio has started all 20 games this season.
Up front, Gustafson has started all 20 games along with midfielder Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.). Kim King and Dana Jarzyniecki have each started four games also this season.
King started her Maryland career on fire by scoring in her first two games. King is the first Maryland freshman to score in her first two college games since Emmy Harbo scored in each of her two games in the 1995 season against Virginia Tech and George Mason.
Winning At Ludwig
Maryland completed a 4-1 homestand on Oct. 25, giving them a 5-4 record at Ludwig Field this season. Since the facility was constructed in 1995, Maryland has dominated opponents at home, compiling a 42-13-3 record for a 75.0 win percentage.
