Obinna Ekezie, scoreless until the final six minutes of the game, hit a game-tying jumper and six free throws down the stretch as Maryland held off Illinois, 67-61, in the second round of the NCAA West Regional. Sarunas Jasikevicius scored 20 points and Rodney Elliott added 16 to lead Maryland. Maryland led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 41-29 early in the second half. The brawny Illini worked their way back to tie the game for the first time, 49-49, with 7:36 to go, then took their first lead on Kevin Turner's 3-pointer. Maryland tied it and retook the lead, but Illinois stayed with the Terps and tied it three more times - on a jumper, another 3-pointer by Turner, and a short jumper by Jarrod Gee that made it 61-61 with 56 seconds left. Ekezie's free-throw shooting down the stretch, including two with 36 seconds left and another pair with 16 seconds to go, sealed the victory. Matt Kovarik's final free throws with seven seconds left gave Maryland the last six points of the game.

QUOTING COACH WILLIAMS
Gary Williams on the BB&T Classic
"We are also looking forward to playing in the BB&T Classic this weekend. It is a tremendous tournament in terms of the teams playing in the two-day event. We face Illinois and George Washington faces Seton Hall in the first round. It is also a tremendous tournament in terms of the national interest. We are fortunate to be playing basketball, but at the same time, we are fortunate to be raising a great deal of money for charity. All of the monies raised go to the local charities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It is a great thing for the national teams to come in and join George Washington and Maryland to play in this tournament. It is important to many of the local charities and hopefully we can continue this in the future."
"Having to play Illinois is not going to be easy. Illinois is picked as one of the top teams in the Big Ten. They have certainly put strong back-to-back recruiting classes together and hopefully we will be able to compete with them."
On the Iowa Victory
"I was really pleased with our team defense. Our defense has been good this year, consistently throughout our first six games."
"Against Iowa we lengthened the time that we ran good offense. We did a great job coming out. This team has the potential to become a good passing team. When you shoot the percentage that we did in the second half, it is usually the result of passing. We passed the ball really well and we got guys really good looks."
"Iowa never quit and I knew they were going to make a run on us to start the second half. You have to be prepared for that nowadays in college basketball. I thought we handled that well. We kept our composure a little better than we did against Notre Dame when they made their run, so hopefully we're learning in those situations."
On Terence Morris
"Terence is one of those guys who is really hard to guard because he is really quick inside and a good enough shooter at 6'9 to hit the outside jump shot."
On Improving As A Team
"We're working to get better. We played a pretty good schedule so far and it doesn't get any easier with Illinois coming up. We're going against some pretty good teams with senior players and we don't have many [ourselves]. We're trying to learn on the job, so to speak, and see if we can continue to get better."
