Terps Host Winthrop In Cole Field House

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 19 Maryland (6-2, 0-0 ACC), which has achieved its highest ranking of the season, plays host to Winthrop on Tuesday night as it attempts to stretch its nation's best non-conference home winning streak to 68 games. The Terps' game against Winthrop begins a five-game homestand which runs through Jan. 2 against Coastal Carolina.

Terps Continue Non-Conference Cole Streak

Maryland enters Tuesday night's game against Winthrop having won a nation's best 67 consecutive non-conference home games in Cole Field House. The Terps' current streak began on Dec. 30, 1989 with a victory over Alcorn State. The last time the Terps were not successful vs. a non-conference team in Cole Field House was Dec. 12, 1989 against Coppin State.

Baxter, Dixon Earn All-Tournament Honors

Sophomores Lonny Baxter (Silver Spring, Md.) and Juan Dixon (Baltimore, Md.) were named to the BB&T Classic all-tournament team. Baxter averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while Dixon averaged 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in helping the Terps advance to the championship game of the tournament. Baxter recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds and Dixon scored the game-winning basket against the No. 16 Fighting Illini on Dec. 4. Baxter then led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds while Dixon scored 15 points and added seven assists in the championship game against George Washington. It marked the second consecutive tournament that Baxter had earned all-tournament honors and was the first time during Dixon's career that he had earned all-tournament honors.

Terps in Non-Conference Games

Maryland has won 70 of 71 non-conference home games during the Gary Williams era. The Terps won the first three non-conference home games during the Williams era and have not lost a non-conference game in Cole Field House since Dec. 12, 1989. In winning 70 of 71 non-conference home games, the Terps have a winning percentage of .986.

Terps Return Home

Maryland returns to the friendly confines of Cole Field House for the fist time since Nov. 22 when the Terps defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 104-45. The Terps have won 90 percent (27-of-30) of their games in Cole in the last three seasons.

Baxter's Week

Sophomore center Lonny Baxter averaged a double-double of 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games last week. Baxter helped lead Maryland to a victory over Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and to a victory over No. 16 Illinois. It marked the first time in school history that the Terps had defeated Big Ten teams in consecutive games. He was named to the BB&T Classic all-tournament team as he averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in leading Maryland to the championship game of the event.

Baxter Is No. 2 In Field Goal Pct.

Sophomore Lonny Baxter, who made 14-of-25 shots from the field in the BB&T Classic, is shooting a team-leading .563 from the field this season. He has shot 50 percent from the field in each of the last five games. He enters Tuesday's game against Winthrop ranked second in school history with a .584 field goal percentage.

Blake Sets Tournament Record

Freshman point guard Steve Blake (Miami Lakes, Fla.) recorded a career-high tying 11 assists against No. 16 Illinois on Saturday. It marked the second time during his career that he had dished out 11 assists. He was credited with that many against Tulane in the second round of the Preseason NIT. His 11 assists against Illinois established a BB&T Tournament record. Blake is averaging 7.0 assists per game in the last four games.

Blake In A Giving Mood

Freshman Steve Blake is averaging a team-leading 6.9 assists per game. He has led the Terps in assists in four of the team's eight games this season and has twice recorded 11 assists in a single-game.

Morris' Blocked Shots

Junior All-American Terence Morris (Frederick, Md.) is averaging a team-leading 3.6 blocked shots per game. He blocked a career-high seven shots against Tulane (Nov. 19) and blocked six against both Notre Dame (Nov. 26) and George Washington (Dec. 5). Morris now has 135 career blocked shots and ranks fifth all-time in the Maryland record books.

Morris Approaching 1,000 Points

Junior All-American Terence Morris is averaging 16.6 points per games and has scored 133 points this season. He enter's Tuesday night's game against Winthrop with 890 career points and needs only 110 points to become the 35th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

Dixon Seeing Double

Redshirt sophomore Juan Dixon scored 15 points against George Washington on Dec. 5 and leads the team with a 17.1 points per game average. He has scored in double figures in all but one of Maryland's eight games and scored his career high of 25 points vs. Tulane on Nov. 22. Dixon has scored 20 or more points three times this season -- he did not reach the 20 point plateau during his redshirt freshman season last year.

Maryland's Chief Thief

Redshirt sophomore Juan Dixon is averaging a team-leading 3.6 steals per game through the first eight games of the season. He has recorded at least three steals in six of Maryland's eight games and was credited with a career-high six steals against Notre Dame on Nov. 26. Dixon has 78 steals in 42 career games for a 1.86 steals per game average.

Dixon Second In Rebounds

Redshirt sophomore Juan Dixon is ranked second on the team in rebounds with a 6.6 per game average. He led the Terps with 11 rebounds against Kentucky in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 24 and has grabbed seven or more rebounds in five of Maryland's eight games.

Miller Doubling His Efforts

Sophomore Danny Miller (Mt. Holly, N.J.) is averaging twice as many minutes (29.6-14.3), twice as many points per game (8.8-4.2), twice as many assists (2.9-1.3) and nearly twice as many steals (1.5-1.0) as a starter this season than he did as a reserve during the 1998-99 season.

Nicholas Ranks Second

Freshman Drew Nicholas (Hempstead, N.Y.) is ranked second on the team with 10 3-point shots made. He was two-of-four against George Washington and hit a career-high four from beyond the arc against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 22.
