Maryland Hosts Women's Soccer Tournament to Benefit Breast Cancer

April 14, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland will play host to the third annual Kicks Against Breast Cancer soccer tournament, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ludwig Field. The tournament will begin Friday night with two featured games: the United States Under-20 National Team against the University of North Carolina at 7:30 p.m. followed by Maryland vs. the Chinese National Team.

The Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament honors the memory of Claudia Mayer who died of breast cancer on Nov. 1, 1996 at the age of 47. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for youth (18 and under). Youth groups of 10 or more may purchase tickets for $6.

Other participants include the U.S. Naval Academy, George Mason University, George Washington University, Northwestern University, University of Minnesota and University of Virginia. Each team, with the exception of North Carolina, will play a total of four games over the course of the weekend. North Carolina will play Friday only.

The Kicks Against Breast Cancer Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Tournament is the only one of its kind in the nation. Its mission is to raise awareness about breast cancer, which strikes one in eight women annually. More than $75,000 has been raised since the tournament's inception in 1997.
