DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke baseball team (15-17, 0-6 ACC) suffered a 21-13 ACC loss to Maryland (9-13-1, 2-5 ACC) on Saturday at Jack Coombs Stadium.
The Terrapin bats pounded out 24 hits, including six for extra bases. Leading the Maryland offense was designated hitter Brian Patenaude, going 5-for-6 on the day with four RBI and four runs scored. The 24 hits and 21 runs were the most given up by the Blue Devils this season.
Leading the Blue Devil offensive charge was junior Ed Conrey (Levittown, Pa.) and sophomore Wes Goodner (Tampa, Fla.). Conrey was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Goodner was 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Senior John Benik (Little Neck, N.Y.) and junior Vaughn Schill (Audubon, N.J.) each belted a home run with Benik posting a three-run shot in the fourth and Schill registering a solo shot in the seventh.
Duke held a two-run lead after two innings before Maryland exploded for seven in the third. The Blue Devils responded with two in the third and six in the fourth to regain a 10-7 lead. With a 11-7 Duke lead on the board after six innings, Maryland regained the lead with five runs in the seventh and sealed the win with two runs in the eighth and seven in the ninth.
The two teams will meet on Easter Sunday for the series finale starting at 1 pm. Sunday's game will be broadcast by Home Team Sports/Fox SportSouth on a tape-delay basis beginning at 4 pm.
