College Park, Md. - Freshman right fielder Matt Swope (New Carrolton, Md.) went 4-for-5 in the first game and junior first baseman Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) went 3-for-3 in the second game, leading Maryland (20-22-1) to a doubleheader sweep of Coppin State (4-35-1) in baseball action today at Shipley Field. Both games were seven innings.
Swope hit three singles and a double in the first game. He also scored a run in each of the first three innings as the Terps raced out to a 9-0 advantage.
Coppin State struck back on a three-run home run by junior second baseman Raoul Edwards in the top of the sixth inning to trim the lead to 9-3. The Terps, however, got their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch by Coppin State starter Erlan Betz.
Senior right hander Aaron McFarling (California, Md.) allowed just three runs on four hits through six innings to improve his record to 2-0. Senior Mike Ginsberg (Baltimore, Md.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to wrap up the win. Betz took the loss for the Eagles.
Munroe went 3-for-3 in the second game, scored three times and knocked in a pair of runs. He ripped a one-out, two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, as Maryland raced out to a 6-0 advantage. The Terps scored all of their runs in the first four innings and held on to record their second shutout of the season.
Junior right hander Ryan Fleetwood (Cambridge, Md.) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters, to improve his record to 2-2. Sophomore Jared Vogt (Pasadena, Md.) struck out the side in the seven inning to preserve the shutout. Freshman right hander Stan Alston took the loss for Coppin State.
Maryland has the weekend off and will return to action on Tuesday at 3 p.m. when it travels to Richmond to face the Spiders.
