Smith's Two Homers Down Terp Baseball

RICHMOND, Va. - Junior DH Rich Smith (Westwood, MA) homered twice and knocked in three runs as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the University of Maryland Terrapins 12-5 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond won its seventh consecutive game and improved to 32-11 overall and 22 1 at home. Maryland fell to 20-23-1.
Smith launched a two-run homer in the third to give the Spiders a 6-2 lead over the Terps. He smacked a solo shot in the seventh, his fourth home run of the spring.
Maryland scored twice in the first on an RBI double by junior DH Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) and an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, MD).
The Spiders took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the second. Junior third baseman G.R. Schalick (Pittsgrove, NJ) led off with a double and moved to third when sophomore outfielder Nic Jackson (Richmond, VA) stuck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Martin (Mahwah, NJ) then singled to bring home Schalick. With one out, junior outfielder Dan Phipps (Richmond, VA) reached on an error that scored Jackson from third. Senior second baseman Nate Rewers (Elma, NY) added an RBI single and junior catcher Josh Lamberg (Ambler, PA) walked with the bases loaded to put the Spiders ahead 4-2. Richmond added two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth for its 12 runs.
Senior outfielder Eric Beer (New City, NY) had four hits, including a pair of doubles, for the Terps with two runs and one RBI. Easter had three hits and knocked in one run for Maryland. The Spiders had seven different players with two hits.
Freshman righthander Bake Leonards (Wyndmoor, PA) picked up the win in relief for the Spiders, going 4.0 innings with six hits, two runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
Richmond will host Maryland again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
