COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland senior pitcher Kelly Shipman entered the seventh inning of game one with a perfect game and finished with a one-hit shutout and pitched a scoreless seventh inning in game two to earn her second save of the season as the Terps swept a college softball doubleheader from Towson University at the North Campus Softball Complex Saturday. Maryland won the first game 5-0 and was victorious in the second game, 5-2.
Maryland's record is now 31-17 while Towson drops to 20-10. The Terps are ranked No. 30 in the most recent USA Today/NFCA poll. It marks the second time in school history that the Terps have won 30 or more games in a single season and need only two victories to tie the school record of 33 set during the 1996 season. Towson had won 11 consecutive games entering today's doubleheader.
Shipman struck out 11 and did not allow a runner until the seventh inning of game one. Sophomore shortstop Lisa Pollack lined a clean single to left as the leadoff hitter to start the inning. Shipman faced only one batter above the minimum 21 batters during the game. Her record is now 16-10 and she has pitched eight shutouts this season.
Four different players led Maryland with two hits in game one. Junior designated hitter Cortney Madea was two-for-three with one run scored; freshman first baseman Kiesha Pickeral was two-for four with one scored; freshman third baseman Beth Radford was two-for three with one run scored and one RBI and senior second baseman Fawna Lackovic was two-for three with two doubles and one RBI.
In the second game, Shipman had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 and send Maryland to the victory. Sophomore rightfielder Annemarie Browne landed the big hit for the Terps with her first career home run - a two run shot - in the second inning. Senior third baseman Chris Naproa and junior first baseman Kara Kitchen had run scoring hits for the Tigers in the third inning.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Bettker pitched 3.1 innings of middle relief without allowing a hit to gain her ninth victory of the season. The Maryland pitching staff held Towson hitless over the last 4.1 innings of the game.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday as it plays host to Hofstra in a double header beginning at 3 p.m
